Haven't had any infections as the result of any cortisone injections [for ganglia].

However, because cortisone is an immune-suppressant as well as an anti-inflammatory, the following may have occurred. [I'm assuming that the injection was given by a qualified health care worker.]

The injection site was immune-suppressed; some staph entered the injection site; because of immune-suppression, the staph infection was not attacked by the body's immune cells normally present in that immediate area; therefore this became a stronger opportunistic infection than would have normally occurred.

Staph is present virtually everywhere. This means that it is also possible that the staph infection may have nothing to do with the cortisone injection.

any time you get an infection there is potential for an infection, although rare. I got a really nasty one from an anesthectic injection at the dentist...even tho all procedure was followed, if there was any bacteria at all around the injection sight it is very easy for it to enter while your getting the infection...this is the reason the area of the injection is cleaned before the injection...but all the bacteria around the site isn't always removed therefore there is a chance of infection. Go over what procedures were done before your inejection...was the cover of the needle left on untill it was time for the injection, so that there was no risk of contamination of the needle by another source?my doctor actually will change the needle part itself once taking the medication from the vile, was the area rubbed with an alcohol swab prior to the injection? It could very well have nothing to do with the injection, it could have to do with the injection but have nothing to do with the person who gave it to you...

the injection was in the shoulder and the doctors at the hospital said it started at the injection sight giving by a orthro doctor consisting of marcaine and celestone, i don"t believe all the safeguards were followed as they have stated that type of staph aureous can only come into the body and into the bone tissue from a needle injection from a dirty needle or not wipe off injection area properly.
