Hi all http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif

Do any of you know if surgical spirit bleaches or stains fabric, mainly carpet?

Kind of a strange one, I know, but I need to find out and none of the chemists I've come across seem to know. Thanks!

Hi Amy! Not sure that I can be of a great deal of help, though I can tell you that I've spilled an entire bottle of rubbing alcohol on a bath rug and there were no signs of bleaching at all.

Hi Daisy!

Thanks for the tip-I have a cat that won't stop weeing on the bathroom carpet and since we rent the flat, I can't just take the carpet out and replace it, so I was told that if I washed the area with detergent, waited til it dried, then scrubbed it with surgical spirit (or rubbing alcohol) or vodka or gin, the smell would lift out and not be there any longer. The bathroom will smell like a distillery, but hey, at this point, I'm willing to try anything!

Thanks again!

Try regular distilled white vinegar. The carpet cleaner company we use says it gets out almost anything. The carpet cleaners that come in spray cans will actually lighten your carpet, as it did mine in one spot.

You can buy an enzyme cleaner at most vets. Cat pee is the worst smell and it's hard to get up (I know, my cat is prone to urinary track infections and pee's on my couch!) Anyway, it's made to eat away at the cat urine and it's safe for all fabric's and carpet.
