I am a 16 year old male. I have a very peculiar condition. I'm not even really sure how to explain it...
But here it goes. Certain parts of my body (hands, feet, lets, arms)especially my hands, frequently turn to a dark blue/purple color, I mean they become so colored one wouldn't think they belonged to a human. They become quite cold. They also become numb. This has been happening more and more frequently. It used to happen only when I was cold/cool. Lately it happens now at a comfortable room temperature. Those are the facts. Some things that may also be happening: I usually always feel tired, discoordinated, dizzy, I have trouble talking in an articulate fassion, its almost like I am drunk. The drunkedness qualities are possibly just something in my mind, but the rest are facts. Am I going to be ok? Or am I in trouble? I appreciate any help, even if you aren't certain, I would be happy for any feedback. Thanks in advance.

no, I haven't been to my Dr. yet. I was hoping that someone here had an idea what was going on. I don't want to freak out my parents and make them take me to the Dr. if it is just something dumb that isn't going to effect me at all. So I am hoping that maybe someone here knows what my situation is.

Sounds like a circulation problem - I would definitely see a doctor about that. He'd probably give you some blood thinners or something. Talk to your parents, let them take you. Maybe it's Raynaud's Syndrome...
Does this happen?
Hands, feet, whatever, turn pale and white and then turn blue.
Feel cold to the touch.
Feel numb and tingling, as if they have fallen asleep.
Become painful and swollen
maybe you didn't mention it all? If so, sounds like raynaud's.

First of all, thank you for the help. I greatly appreciate it. I do not however think I have Raynaud's Syndrome because my hands do not either turn white or experience any pain. Plus, like I mentioned, it isn't just my hands. The only feeling I get is a tingly, cold, numb feeling. I wouldn't classify it as pain. I experience this feeling a great deal in my toes as well as my hands and from what I understand Raynaud's is just the hands. A couple more symptoms I forgot to mention:

1) My hands are incapable of staying still, they are always shivering, reguardless of temperature.
2) When my hands turn color, small circles remain my normal skin color.
Again, thanks for the help, and any future help that you may be able to offer. Again, I would appreciate it if you could keep throwing out possibilities so I can research them and eventually find what I have probably. Have a good night!

As far as I'm aware Shin Splints are a sports injury.

ConcernedJeff I think your parents would probably want you to speak out if there is something wrong. It doesn't sound too good but I'm not qualified to say that - go to your doctor who is - even if its nothing you will have done the right thing, you won't be bothering anyone. Good luck ! :)

I would schedule an appointment with your doctor asking for a general check up and bloodwork. I would then explain the situation to him. I would definitely recommend you get a complete blood count (cbc), and in particular have your bloodsugar (glucose) level checked. Some of the things you described (poor circulation in extremities, numbness, tiredness, dizzy, etc.) may be attributable to widely fluctuating bloodsugar levels and possibly diabetes. Do you have any other symptoms that could be caused by diabetes such as frequent urination or thirst? Also, what does your diet typically consist of?

Thanks again for the help. I am actually quite skinny myself. I don't think that is the only reason for my problem as like I said it is getting worse. I figured it to be a circulation problem, but I am not sure of how serious it is. I have had shin splints (cracking of shin bones from excessive excersise on hard surface)before, so either that isn't what I had or you have confused shin splints with something else. Probably me. My diet: well, I guess it is about as good as any other teenager. I guess I probably should find time to get to the Dr's. I would like to know how serious my condition is ASAP, and there is only one way to find out. Thanks again, and I would appreciate any more thoughts.

Well, if your problems are being caused by high bloodsugar levels, you can get some urinalysis test strips at just about any pharmacy. The glucose test strips are usually in the diabetic section or just ask the pharmacist for them. They usually come in a bottle of 50 test strips for around $10. Just follow the instruction sheet with the bottle. Bayer is one brand. If you show positive for glucose in your urine, you would definitely need to get checked ASAP by a doctor.

Hi there. The symptoms you describe fit me to a T. My extremities were always cold. I painted my fingernails just so folks wouldn't comment on the bluish tinge. I wore mittens indoors during the winter. I had to take hot showers before bed just so that I would be warm enough to sleep. The fatigue, dizzness, slurred speech, memory loss, forgetting words - I had that. Fortunately, by way of bloodwork, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My medication has reversed all of those symptoms. I'm begging you to please see your doctor and have yourself screened for a thyroid disorder. Please check out the thyroid disorder board here and see if anything else rings a bell.

Best wishes,
DY

Do your lips also turn blue or purple? If they do (I dont want to frighten you but) it could also be a heart problem. Defently tell your parents right away and see your doc. and just make sure. You dont want to take any chances! Take Care

Thanks all of you, especially DY. Do my lips turn blue/dark purple: I don't think so. But I better find out for sure. I am trying to get a Drs. appointment on Saturday, but you know how Drs. are. I hope I am as lucky as DY and can have my problems fixed as well, but I am ready for anything. Just wondering, can a 16 year old go to the doctors on his own? Or do you still have to have a guardian untill you are 18. I don't want some doctor to tell my parents that there is something wrong with me if it is serious. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Jeff,I'm curious why you can't tell your parents anything...their suppose to be there for you. If you go to the doctor, and then they find out, won't they be upset you didn't say a word to them? What is the situation with your parents? Diana

I just don't want my parents to get worried if there is nothing wrong. I have already thought better of it and we are trying to make a Drs appointment.

Hey Jeff!

Just curious whether or not you've been to see your doctor yet.

Jeff: I have nearly this exact same problem. Although I never feal dizzy, tired, or any of that, I find myself now always having this problem, even when I'm not cold. It used to be when I was cold, now it happens like you said, at normal room temperatures. Have you found a way to prevent this yet? Thanks a lot.

Being inappropriately cold, and extremity numbness can be related to thyroid imbalance. When you get to a doctor have this checked out.
Let us know what you find out!

I went to the doctor yesterday. He told me that I had tested negative for things like Thyroid problems, and Lupus, among others. He isn't sure if it is Raynaud's Phenomenon yet, but he put me on some medication to improve my circulation. Today was the first day I used it, but to no prevail. :(

Many of those on the Thyroid Board were falsely diagnosed as having a normal thyroid by their lab tests. You need to get copies of your lab results to find out if this happened to you.
Maybe your thyroid is fine, but you should know most docs don't understand that all hormonal issues are individual, and they must look at symptoms.

The drug my doctor put me on is Verapamil. It really hasn't helped in the 5 days or so i've taken it.
