if your dog tag says 0- blood type and you are wounded in combat and they give you 0- blood and you find out later they had the wrong blood type on the tag and you really have 0+ would that kill you.

hi - i did a quick search and this is what i found.
It's important that a donor's blood type is compatible with the blood type of the person who is receiving the blood transfusion. A severe reaction can occur when two incompatible blood types are mixed together. Severe illness and even death can result.
just curious - why are you asking???

I'm not in the medical field, but from what I understand, for one transfusion everything ought to be okay. But the person would now be Rh sensitized, and any future transfusion of the wrong type could be serious. (The Rh factor comes up most often when people with different factors have children. Everything is okay with the first child. The problems start with subsequent children.)

One wrong transfusion is not always OK. My grandfather was given the wrong transfusion many years ago and had to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life because of this. Your best bet would be to research this one web as that is the best place to find your answers.

i was in the army and my dog tag showed 0-, and i had a very bad accident and needed blood transfusion and later i learned they gave me 0+ blood and i complained and they had run tsets before they gave me the transfusion and that is my real blood type. the army must have messed up and all these years i thought my blood type was 0-. i was lucky i didn"t get hurt in combat, because on the lines i don"t think they bother, but what is on your tag. i feel i was lucky again.

I haven't had my blood typed since I was in jr. high. I hope "I know" my blood type! they told me I was AB+. I may ask my doc the next time I'm in there to make sure. Glad you guys brought up this topic!

Here's information on blood typing:
MEDLINEplus Medical Encyclopedia Blood typing
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003345.htm
Back in the 70s a compound was discovered that could prevent Rh factor syndrome. When O negative blood is in short supply, this compound is given to prevent complications. Here's a link for information on this compound.
MEDLINEplus Drug Information Rh o(D) Immune Globulin (Systemic)

[Our child needed very many transfusions and received this Rh factor med - so I know it works.]
