Part of our fears about SARS is rooted in our culture. Check out this interesting article: http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/news/newstip.asp?p=all&id=1625&catid=3,2

I am nervous about this illness personally, especially as we fly regularly. It seems as though it isn't fatal typically but still, I am concerned. Especially after news reports today that it is in Toronto and that is terribly fr from where I live. EEEEEKKKK.

Tam, there maybe something in it but the article you directed me to was more like a plug for the professor who is publishing a book. This bug has the right to be thought to be sinister no matter where it originated until we find a vaccine because it is easily transmitted and it is a killer. That it originated in a third world country is jsut how it is - most bugs will come from places where sanitation and hygeine are not up to the standards as the rest of the world. That is just how it is and nothing to do with culture or racism.

I fear for the people in Asia, especially for those in China. I'm also upset because I can't travel to Asia this summer like I usually do. But I am ever so thankful that there have been no deaths in Korea and America from SARS.

Hey all...
I live in Toronto. There have been 16 deaths here, that's it. The American media, as of this morning, are stating that people are dropping like flies, and that our city has become a ghost town. NOT TRUE!!! We still bussle about as usual. There have just about contained the disease.
SARS is killing people with already weak immune systems, ie..elderly people, children, cancer patients, aids patients etc... The issue lies in people who display symptoms and still leave their homes. However, the medical emergency the city of Toronto has called seems to be working in terms of making people realize that they should NOT go out in public.
SARS is from the flu family - so we think. People die from the flu every single day, all over the world...Does it get this kind of attention? There is still no cure for the common flu, except the shot for prevention - and even that's not guaranteed to work. Believe me, I had my shot in Oct, and got sick in Dec.
I do understand your concerns though, but make no mistake that the media blows this WAY out of proportion. Toronto is still the lovely and happy city it always was.
