View Full Version : Feeling like I broke my tailbone--what can I do?

I had a bad fall over a week ago and landed square on my butt on cement. I fell from a standing height (was knocked off my feet). It hurt like heck when it first happened and now it gets aggrivated whenever I lift something heavy. The heavier the item and the more I have to bend to lift it, the worse the pain is. I didn't hear or feel a snap when I fell. Everything seems *together* back there. The pain is right on my tailbone, and sometimes appears off to the side.

I know it's virtually impossible to diagnose ailments over the internet, but does it sound like I broke it? When I fell I didn't fall in a sitting position, I went in more of a reclined way, so the force wasn't on the tip of it.

I know that all I can do for it is give it rest/ice and avoid lifting things. That's going to be hard since we're moving. Lastly, how long do these things generally take to heal?

Any advice welcome. Thanks.

I fell on my tail end 4 years ago and it took forever for the pain to stop. There isnt much that can be done for a broken Coccyx.

You might try hot showers, take OTC pain relievers and sit on a pillow. If the pain does not subside, you may want to see your doctor.

Might be a hairline fracture I would get an xray to be sure.

I broke my tailbone about 9 years ago (when I was 9 :)) in a bicycle accident. I at first figured it was seriously bruised so I ignored it, but after 3 months of pain I finally got my ma to take me to the doc. They did an xray and it had been broken but was healing already and they couldn't do much for it anyhow. If you did break it, I'll tell you, it will hurt for a hell of a long time, and then after a while it will only hurt sometimes. Like if I sit in one spot for too long, it hurts like crazy to stand up. If I sit on a hard chair, I feel very uncomfortable.

Try not to sit directly on it for a while, use a cold compress, and avoid straining work that irritates it. If the pain is unbearable, go to the docs and get it checked. Good luck! :)

Y'know, the pain just kind of suddenly went away a day or two ago. It's kind of nice to not have it hurting any more.

Thanks for the imput and advice.

Coccyx pain... i'm not gonna even count how many time's i've fallen on my tail bone.. but i've slipped on ice back in 2002 (during great ice storm of Okl)...fallen down 4 steps, landing... on the glorious tailbone........It hurts off and on , esp with weather changes... all I do for it is sit in nice hot bath , take a few advils and a pillow if at puter.Plus I have 4 hernaited discs that go from lower back down to tail bone so one aggrivates the other at times.

But do have it checked but will tell you, ain't alot they can do for a broken tail bone.

and as much padding as i have on my rear, it doesn't help either ~L~ when falling.
