View Full Version : Wisdom teeth removal... a few questions.

I am afraid I will be getting my wisdom teeth removed soon, and I am unsure whether the BC pill will affect this.
I will have mine taken out the same way my sister did, which was in a hospital under a general aneasethetic.
Does this mean I will have to stop taking the pill for a certain amount of time before the surgery? If so, about how long? I will ask the dentist at my next visit, but if it is a long time (several months) I would need to know now.
I know for a Laparocopy you need to stop taking them for 4 weeks before and after the surgery. Hopefully it isn't the same as I take the pill to help pains.

Also, only one of my teeth has emerged through the gums, and only slightly. It is on my bottom jaw. I saw the dentist in February '03 and he told me that as soon as I feel any pressure on my teeth to go back straight away (I am on July 9). I have had a lot of pressure and my teeth are now very close together and I don't want them any closer or they will start to go crooked. These are my top teeth and they are not even close to coming through the gums. So does this mean they will cut the gum open to remove the teeth? If so, do they then have to put stiches in? Would they use dissolvable stiches or would I need to get them removed? How long before I can eat proper foods?

And another question: after the surgery how well do you feel (ignoring the pain)? I don't know whether I could get it done during term and still be ok to attend lectures, etc. Would it be best to try and get them removed during a mid-term break?

Thankyou for any answers. :round:

OH! I am sorry to hear about your horrible experience.
Hopefully I don't have to go through all that.
I am only 19, but my sister had to have hers removed when she was 16. I think that is fairly early.
Were you put completely to sleep?
How long before you were able to eat?
I can remember my sister had to use mouthwash after each meal until the stiches were gone.
I have had sore, aching jaws for the past couple of weeks, and also it feels like I have an ear infection a lot of the time.
Now I'm nervous!

Thanks for sharing your experience. :round:

When I had mine taken out I was put under. I had also heard many horrible things about getting it done. you will have to take great care of the stiches after you get it done. I have heard you can have the wounds "lasered" shut. Just like they do when you get your tonsils out now. I did have pain for a while. But the pain was mainly from just one of the spots where a tooth was. I guess it was deep in there. I did get a lot of headaches for mabey 5 days after it was done. But I also think it was not as bad as people say. The good part is it is not a major operation. The worse part is the pain after it is over. But that pain is worth it If the teeth stay and cause you problems. You might have to have major denist work done many times. I suggest that you plan on aloting mabey a week so you can just make sure. I am almost sure you will be ok and in the modern days they will make it easier. But if you are uncomfortable with this I suggest you make sure you have a week clear. So if there are problems or headaches or what have you. you can just take some pain killers and take a long nap.

I DIDN'T MEAN TO SCARE YOU. MOST PEOPLE SAY IT'S A BREEZE....AND SINCE YOU'RE SO YOUNG, YOU PROBABLY WON'T ANY PROBLEMS. I WAS PUT TO SLEEP, TOTALLY....AND LOOKING BACK ON IT, I REMEMBER GOING BACK TO WORK ONLY A FEW DAYS LATER. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A WEEK OFF AND RESTED. BUT YOU KNOW HOW US OLD PEOPLE ARE....YOU'LL BE FINE....AND YOU'LL BEGLAD YO HAD IT DONE....

I had mine out when I was 13 and it was a breeze for me.

I was knocked out completely and I think the worst part is when you're waking up. You really can't go back to sleep but you're so tired you just want to doze off. Also, the recovery area where I was was fairly noisy. Also, at least for me, the anesthesia makes you COLD!!! I always end up with piles and piles of blankets on me and I'm still shivering. The IV also hurts. Ask if you can have some local where they plan to put the IV in. Believe me, it makes a huge difference.

After getting my teeth out I slept for a few hours at home. My face was all swollen and my jaw couldn't open very far. I spent the rest of the day with frozen peas on my face, that helped. I was eating apple sauce that night and was working on fishsticks the next day. I'd stick to smoother foods just because it seems easier to keep things clean in there. And because your mouth is swollen you might have a tendency to drool. Just keep a towel handy and on your pillow and you'll be okay.

It was a bit fustrating because I couldn't talk for a day, and eating is difficult. I lost 10 pounds.

I had Tylenol with Codeine, and it worked well. Knocked me out, but it worked.

I had dissolveable sutures. At my one week check they were poking me, but I didn't want to have the oral surgeron take them out because he said it might hurt.

I was out of school when I had it done, but I've known people who've gone back to school the next day. It all depends on how well you're feeling.

Good luck! Oral surgeries are not always fun, but enjoy being able to take a break for a day or two.

I had mine removed (top and bottom) when I was 17. My wisdom teeth hadn't actually started coming through yet, so the dr. had to cut open the gums and use a little saw to cut out the teeth. I was awake during the procedure but they had me on nitrous (laughing gas) so it wasn't so bad. I was really swollen that day but it wasnt' too bad the following day (it was during the summer but if it was during school, I would have been able to go). The pain was tolerable but Advil took care of it.

Overall, really not too bad!

I think my main problem is I can't tolerate pain at all. I would rather put up with a mild toothache for a long time than have this operation done. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/redface.gif

Another thing I worry about is the feeling of being put to sleep. Is it frightening? Did you worry that you were not going to wake up?

I can remember having the IV thing put in once before for something else. It sure hurts...and then it fell out and leaked so had to be pushed back in. I didn't know it would be involved with this. I will remember to ask for the local ...

Yuck. Do they use a saw? Only one of mine is about 1/3 through!
I guess I will be sleeping.

What if I am asleep but still able to feel the pain?

I am worrying too much. :)
Thanks again for sharing. It does help.

Also, did anybody have visible bruising on their face for a while? Someone told me this can happen.

During your surgery you'll be completely knocked out so you will feel no pain at all (this is the whole point of anesthesia).

I've had four surgeries and never worried about not waking up. Anetheseologists are trained in recussitation and monitor you very closely so the moment you start having a problem they're on top of it.

Anyway, being knocked out is a very weird feeling, but not scary. What they'll do is put the IV in, then they'll send some anesthesia through it. You'll feel normal until the drugs hit your brain and whoa...that's a weird feeling. All of a sudden you feel a little dizzy and the room kind of swims. At this point you're about to go out so they hook up the oxygen mask and tell you to take deep breaths. You won't remember falling asleep at all, it's just like the scene changes in a movie. One moment you're about to pass out, then all of a sudden you're in recovery. It's weird. I think they wake you up before taking you off to recovery. I remember with my three oral surgeries being wheeled out of the OR, but with my last surgery (knee surgery) I only remember being rolled into my little station in recovery. They'll put gauze in your mouth so that'll be in there when you wake up.

Some people have brusing on their face. I didn't. If you're good about icing it you should be okay. They make new ice sheets now that are great for faces because they're thin, light, and don't leak. I had those for my knee and they were wonderful.

If they don't give you local there's ways to handle it. In my experience, a nurse is always holding your hand when the needle goes is. You can focus on that, or find something in the room to really concentrate on. With my first surgery there was an electical cord like a phone cord coming from the ceiling that hooked up to the doc's headset. I still remember counting the five loops in it over and over while the needle went in. But get local if you can.

Well I had all 4 of mine cut out the same day and I didn't have much of a problem at all. If you take the pain meds you will be fine. My jaws hurt more than my teeth, just because they had it stretched open for so long! But you do have to eat very soft foods for a few days or it will hurt. I survived on mashed potatoes and macaroni. But don't be so scared, it really isn't as bad as it seems. I was terrified cause I have never had any kind of surgery or anything, but it was so much better than I had expected. But the drooling thing is a problem, and for the first day they will bleed a lot so you have to keep packing them. And trust me....you don't want to just wait and live with a toothache, cus they only get worse hon. I waited a very long time to get mine done cus I was scared and the pain got to be unbearable! But I am SO glad I got it over with. It really isn't as bad as you think. But if you smoke you do need to watch out for dry sockets....so try not tosmoke or if you do gargle mouthwash immediately afterward, same goes for eating too. You have to keep them very clean or you can get an infection, so do as the doc says and it will be fine. :)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...you definitely should ask the doc about the blood clot med. I would say you will probably have to stop taking them before the surgery or you will bleed a WHOLE lot.

I have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out on Monday. Im stressed out because I heard it was a painful procedure. The Doc told me not to eat anything 6 hours before, but how am I to take Vicodin (for the PAIN!) on an empty stomach!? Also, when you wake up out of the surgery do you feel immediate pain? I would think so. Reading all the posts on this forum does make me feel a little more confident.

No, you don't feel pain when you first wake up cuz you are still numb. My mouth stayed numb for several hours and I couldn't talk. You are just a little confused when you wake up. And why are you taking vicodin before the surgery? You won't feel a thing during it, as you will be asleep and the anesthesia is still workin when you wake up.

They'll give you Vicodin after your sugery. They told you not to eat beforehand because if for some reason there's a problem you can choke on your vomit during the surgery. And if there's nothing to throw up, there isn't as much of a danger. Don't worry, they have to take things on a worse case scenario for your safety.

After your surgery you can eat to your heart's content. I'd try starting off with soft foods because Vicodin will make you sick on an empty stomach. If you ask me, Vicodin seems a bit strong for wisdom teeth. I had codeine and was fine.

Best wishes tomorrow!

I just got back from the surgery about 3 hours ago. It was so easy, i have no pain at all. The vicodin didnt make me sick, even when i took it on an empty stomach. I didnt know they gave you novicane after you fall asleep so when you wake up your all numb with no pain at all. Anyway it was a peice of cake.

Reading over the posts others posted, one said something about blood clotting med.. If you meant birth control pills, you might ask the doc about it if he put you on antibiotics.. Some can reduce the effect of birth control pills.. I'm glad everything went well.. I didn't have any problems either.. Just remember.. DONT suck on straws or smoke for a couple days if you smoke.. You don't want to get dry socket.. it hurts like a mug!!

Hi. Thankyou again for all the new posts. I haven't checked in a while.
Luckily I don't smoke.
I know when my sister had hers out it hurt a lot, and that was only 1 year ago, so the surgery techniques won't be much different. :)
But reading everyones' experiences suggests that the pain varies a lot from person to person.
I haven't heard of choking during the surgery. That's another worry. LOL. How long should food be avoided beforehand?
I am just worried about the three teeth that haven't came through the gums yet. Oh well. They have to go.
It is me that is on Birth Control pills (sorry, I shouldn't have shortened it to BC). But it is not the effectiveness against pregnancy that I am worried about. The doctor told me to take the pill continuously to help with a problem (endo pain), so I don't want to have to stop taking them for a month or anything for this because that would cause a lot of different pain if I am to do this.

Does anyone know why/if it is necessary to stop taking the pill before any type of surgery?

Thanks again anyone. :)

The only meds I've heard of that interfere with birth control pills are antibiotics. But do ask your doctor. When you go in for your pre-surgical interview thingy, they'll ask you about any meds you're taking so you'll be able to find out for sure.

I had my wisdom teeth out three years ago, when I was 24. I had all four done...two had already come in, the other two had to be cut out.

When you're going under general anesthetic, you need to not eat or drink anything after 10:00 p.m. the night before (assuming you're having surgery in the morning). I had never been put under before, and I was really nervous! As much as a control freak as I am, the idea of being rendered unconscious was not a cheerful thought. But I talked to a good friend of mine who had, get this, heart surgery when she was in 7th grade! She was very understanding about my fears and put them to rest easily.

I remember being in the chair that Friday morning, asking the doctor, while he was injecting me with the knock-out juice, if I could go to fencing practice the following Tuesday, he answered and I was out. I woke up an hour or so later really groggy but with no pain at all, but I was nauseous as hell!! They had to give me two shots within an hour or so to make the nausea go away, but it finally did.

I was careful to follow all the instructions, so I had no problems whatsoever. (But even if you follow their directions to the letter, you may still have issues, so don't be surprised). Anyway, I wasn't to eat for a day, nor was I to use a straw for a week so as not to aggrivate the place where my teeth were. I went shopping the next day, and never did have any pain. I took my pain meds as directed to ward off any possible pain, but never had problems and stopped the pain meds within a couple days.

And I was fencing four days later with no problems.

I hope this helps! Try not to worry, stock up on pudding, applesauce, mashed potatoes and ice cream, and I hope your surgery goes well!

Greenoctopus dont worry about the pain. They give you novicaine shots when your asleep so when you wake up your gonna be numb. If you take your vicodin before the numbness goes away (about 2 hours) then you wont have pain at all. I only take 1 pill every 6 hours for pain, and that makes me pain free. If I really needed I could take 2 pills every 4 hours. As far as pain goes its not really painful its just sore and achey. Anyway dont worry about it, you'll be fine :)

yeah, the pain wasn't a prob for me either...didn't even end up needing the pain killers...but the swelling was really bad for me...my brother invited friends around just so they could look at my face...i was like a freak on exhibit!
