Your liver is located exactly in that spot. It could be inflamed if you're a heavy drinker or have taken a lot of tylenol based medications lately.

I would guess if its on both sides its your small or large intestine. I get pains there as well at times. Just above that on your "left" side is your stomch. Do these pains come shortly after you eat? Try a search for human anatomy and get a diagram of the human body and it shows what organs are where. Sure helps ease ones mind when they dont know where pain is coming from.

Could be if you were coughing alot you pulled abdominal muscles. You could try a fake cough and if they hurt you have your answer. Take care.

I have a pain under my ribs too. Now, I feel like it's a muscle pain. Have you started doing a lot of sit ups lately. I also have celiacs disease, yeast overgrowth and elevated liver enzymes at times, but the pain is right on the muscle, it feels like.

You should go to WEB MD and submit your question - they may have an answer for you since doctors hang out there. Needless to say if it keeps up, please get it checked out!! Good luck!

I believe your kidneys could cause discomfort in those areas.

Gas could do it too.

Sounds like pulled muscle/strain....since you mentioned the situps---50 at one time....should start out slow. I agree with coughing also.....excessive coughing will certainly cause soreness since you are using muscles to cough.

I have been looking for others with pain under their ribs too. It's not sore to the touch. There is a tightness and feel tight with each breath.

I thought I broke a rib, but the doc. said it would be painful when I take a deep breath. My chest xray showed clear lungs. Blood and urin tests were okay. The ultra sound showed dark shadows on my gallbladder, but the hepatobiliary test show my GB functioning well.

I noticed a little lump to the left where the ribs meet. The GP said it was my sternum. But it was not the same as the right side and I thought it was unusual. She said if the pain is symetrical (on both sides of my ribs) it probably is not serious.

Also, since I have hiatal hernia and taking Protonix for acid reflux, she thought my rib pain may be related to it. I don't know how it would though.

I am just not satisfied with her explanation and still don't know of what is causing the pain under/between my ribs. The pain is just under the breast and to the outside of each rib.

What the heck is this?

your liver is actually behind your ribs. your kidneys are closer to your lower back. and your instestines are much farther down. it is most likely your gallbladder, located DIRECTLY under your right ribs. see your doctor, it could be gallstones or gallbladder disease.

i know what i am talking about because two months ago i had my gallbladder removed, and now know alot more about the digestive system than i really would like to. try visiting the digestive disorders board. every other entry is about gallbladders and i'm a regular there.

disregard what any other person said on this post, because they are wrong.
