My mother is constantly complaining of feeling the cold. She is a fit and reasonably healthy 64 yr old. She is active, lives on a farm, eats healthy, has never smoked, sometimes has a small wine with dinner and isn't on any medication (appart from tablets which doctor is trialing for her "cold" condition).
She has gone to her doctor and he has done some tests and is now going through a few forms of medication to see if something will work. The first tablets were too strong and she broke out in something similar to cold sores. The new tablets she is trialing made her face go bright read and felt like she was on fire and are giving her bad headaches.
It gets annoying as when she is cold and rugged up, she thinks everybody else is cold and is constantly telling me when i visit that i should be wearing something warmer or i'll catch a cold (it's winter here now).
Maybe some people feel the cold more than others and it's just normal, but it really bothers her. Does anybody else suffer or has suffered anything similar? Thanks in advance :)

I've noticed that as my parents have gotten older they have both become less tolerant to cold. My mom grew up in Minnesota so she used to be pretty tough!! It may just be a normal part of aging. It's definitely worth following up with a dr. as there are health conditions that can decrease one's tolerance to cold. I'm often anemic and as a result have a hard time in cold weather. I wear so many layers I can't put my arms down!! My parents finally relented and live in Florida during the winters. When my parents come to visit us kids we all know to just crank up the heater!!

I work in a nursing home so feeling cold is something that often although not always comes with aging. You need to find out what tests they have already done on your mother and then post that here and perhaps someone can suggest other tests or causes besides thyroid problems and poor circulation. Thyroid problems are a frequent cause of feeling cold so that should have been the first thing they checked. I for one have poor circulation and have cold hands and feet all year around but then my sister in law has slight thyroid problems and she is absolutely freezing all year around and wears sweatshirts most of the time. Since this is a new problem for your mother post what tests have been done already and maybe someone can offer more advice.

Thanks for the replies :) My mother has just changed doctors and this doctor is basically starting from scratch. I'll definitely find out exactly which tests he has done on her.
Her previous doctor rarely did any tests, no matter what your complaint was. He would just give out those free pills which pharmaceutical companies issue to doctors for free. Any suggestions my parents would have he would just discount and always goes on about how he wants to go to the USA and start a practice over there. Just what you guys need...NOT!!
