Hello,
I am in need fo some help. I'm a usually healthy 26 year old male but about 9 days ago I noticed I had a high fever. There is NO flulike symptems, no nausia, no sickness. I don't have insurance, so I went to the free health clinic. They took a chest xray, drew blood, and took urine samples two different times. I've been there three times and they have been unable to find anything wrong with me. They gave me motrin and tylonal and told me it's prob a virus. The last time they saw me, they were shocked that it had not gone away and sent me to the emergency room - which I left because I can not afford it.
The only symptoms I have had the past 9 days are a high fever and an over

Whether you think you can afford it or not you need to get this treated before it turns into something serious. If you are not working then then you should be able to qualify for some type of assistance and if you are working then there really is no excuse not to get checked out. It will cost you more in the long run if this turns in to something serious and you wind up in the hospital needed extensive treatment then if you get this taken care of now. Good Luck.

A fever this high for an extended period of time is serious. Your body is obviously battling something--be persistent and in the meantime take measures to keep your body temperature down if you can. Good luck!

A fever of this duration could mean there is an infection somewhere in your body. It could even be internal or just a cut the has become infected. Are you sexually active? Could you have contracted an nfection that way? Worth getting checked uot. Your body is telling you something, listen to it....Tagger

You are going to cook your brain if you don't do something. Also, there is a huge risk of sterility. I can't believe that with a temperature that high, they didn't have you admitted the first time you saw someone. Have you considered the possibility that you could be infectious at some point? Start drinking water by the bucketfuls and get treated. This is a no-brainer. 25 is too young to die! Good luck.

Oh wow - you have got to get this taken care of. Many hospitals have special finance plans, or you might qualify for some other stuff like medicaid. Has anyone checked you for meningitis? Call that free clinic NOW and ask them what tests they ran. Meningitis is extremely contagious, and also fatal if not treated properly. I can't imagine that in CA there aren't some assistance plans. I can't stress enough that you need this treated.

We'll it's day 10 now and same thing. I have been taking the Motrin that the doctor gave me, or tylanol, or excedrin and when that takes effect, my temperature goes back to normal, my aches go away, and everything seems pretty close to normal until it starts wearing off. I know that all I am doing is covering something up though. The problem is what? The doctors can't name it so they can't treat it. I think they believe it's a virus and just want me to wait it out, take motrin, and drink lots of water - but they're not certain, and I can't help but feel that I'm doing some serious damange to myself, while I just wait it out.
We'll I'm off to the health clinic one more time today, and then if they still don't help, I'm going to go to pay to go see a doctor and hopefully get this worked out. I'm not feeling too positive though, that they will fare any better with a diagnosis.
Thanks for all your responses and I look forward to hearing more.
Cheers,
M

Just because doctors can't find anything wrong doesn't mean there isn't. When I was 13 I had become so sick and in the hospital and no one knew what was wrong. Eventually after about 4 months. I came very close to dying and only then did the figure out it was a severe case of acid reflux disease. The moral is, don't take no for an answer, see other doctors at other care centers, someone has to know what is up.

So the doctor seems not to be too woried. He called it a FOU'S - a fever of unknown origin, and said that since there are no symptoms, and nothing wrong, that there is no way to detect what I have. The clinic usually did not do blood cultures, but in a miracle, said that they would order some of the right equipment so that they could do the blood and urine cultures. So I'm back 2morrow to give blood and should have the restults by Friday. I find this a huge stroke of good luck, since paying for bloodwork would pretty much cost me my college education, I'm praying for the best, though I can't help but be pessimistic, since nothing's changed for the better or worst in a long time.
Thanks again for your thoughts.

The Tylenol and Motrin they're giving you isn't intended, and never was, to cure the problem, only treat the fever and aches. You have to remember that the people at the clinic are very good-hearted health professionals who have a great amount of compassion for the huddled masses who can't afford something better. Their hope is to be able to provide some sort of antibiotic for minor illnesses. I'm afraid you're going to have to bite the bullet and see a real professional and work something out with them. Money isn't everything, but your health is. What good to have a college degree, but no strength to put it to good use. Even if the blood tests do show something, you're going to have to follow up with someone. Start saving your pennies now. I hope for you a sudden break in fever and test results that are minor.

Veeco,
You didn't say if you were working or not, If not, go to your local welfare office. I know you don't want to do this, but when I wasn't working they gave me six months of MIS which is temporary insurance when I only had to pay $30 for my visits to hopital or doctor. The free clinic in my town told me about this. Do you live in CA. If not, still ask. Also, a high fever can mean alot of things. I went two years with a continued fever. It turned out something was going on with my blood, CytomegaloVirus. But it took one doctor to refer me to a research center to actually diagnose me. City doctors were killing me with toxic medications. If your fever continues, that is your body trying to fight off something. Doctors seem to take this lightly at times. I had to really break down in the doctors office for the doctor to believe I was really ill. And this was after I had seen just about every doctor in my city.

Really off topic, but reading these posts I can't help but feel lucky that I live in Canada where a visit to the doctor is just a matter of fact placing yor health card on the counter. Though our health system is far from ideal (huge waiting lists etc) we do tend to take for granted our govt health insurance. God forbid that when my kids were babies I couldn't afford to take them to the doctor!
My brother lives in Fla (dual citizenship) and he has to pay astronomical fees for his health insurance. He says it is balanced out by our lousy Canadian dollar, but when I hear stories like yours my heart breaks that you would have to balance your education against your health. What a quandry that must be!
I dearly hope that you can find resolution to your health problem without having to give up on your dreams and your future. Please consider putting off your education if only for a short while in order to get well...Tagger

I had similar fever manmy years back. However it had started after a very dry hard poop. There was blood on the tissue. It turns out I split a 'roid and infected my blood stream with bacteria. A round of anti-biotics cleared it up quick.
Tagger, I too feel bad for yanks that cannot afford to get treatment. I am in Kenora, Ont.

Thanks to everyone else for your thoughts and well wishes......
we'll yesterday my fever finally broke after about 13 days! I was pessemestic at first, but it's stayed down and I'm feeling much better. My strengths going back up, so I'm hoping this will continue to progress.
So the free clinic was nice and helpful. Right as I was about to head out to the regular doctors office and fork over my schooling money for the next year, the free clinic finally opted to help me out and do blood tests. I gave blood to them a few days ago and went back in today to get the results, expecting something like Mono or something.
We'll though they've got great hearts and were kind enough to try to help me, they messed up the blood tests, so other than confirming that I did have an infection - high level of white blood cells - they could tell me nothing else. But I'm feeling better, so I guess that's really all that matters, though it would have been nice to know what was wrong.
So hopefully this was only something like a passing virus.
Thanks again for all your help, and I'm in the process of finding health insurance!
