Hey everyone. I don't know if anyone here knows anything about this, but recently it has sarted bothering me.
A couple of months ago I woke up and as I'm getting out of bed I start to stand up but I absoulutly cannot stand on my right leg. I immediatly fall to the floor and get carpet burn on my knee. As I start to stand back up pushing myself up with my left leg and then standing on my right leg I fall again. At first when I fell I just thought I was still half a sleep but by the time I fell the second time I knew I was wide awake. So I pulled myself back into bed and I feel the muscle either tightening up really tight or loosening up. It is hard to distinguish between the two. This happened on one other occasion Same story. I fall as I'm getting out of bed. But I experienced a little pain in my leg when the muscle was either tightening are loosening after I was back in bed.
This has scared me somewhat. It has been a while since this has happened but I still wonder what the problem was. If anyone has any idea what this could be or this has happened to someone let me know. Thanks in advance!

The nerves to the legs run from the base of the spine to each leg. If one has been damaged or is being pinched you can loose control of your thigh muscle but still have control lower down. This happened to me after surgery when the epidermal was too close to one leg nerve. My right thigh was paralyzed but I could move my calf and foot muscles. After the epidermal was removed it came back.
In your case have you fallen hard on your butt lately? You really should see a G.P. and have him reccomend a specialist(probably a neurologist).

Thanks for your reply!
I don't know that I have fallen on my butt lately all though it is possible. I am kind of accident prone so I can't keep up with every thing. If it is a pinched nerve or damage, do you think it can heal on its own? It has been a while since this has happened so maybe it did. Hopefully it won't come back worse. My legs bother me alot but they have since I was little so I'm actually use to it. I just figured that this had something to do with it. Thanks again for your input!

I know. That is exactly how mine was! It is actually quite scary. Did this ever bother you again? The doctor didn't seem concerned? Sometimes I think doctors are too lazy or in a hurry to even listen to what a person says and sometimes it turns out to be something really serious! I am 17, so this was really scary for me especially since I shouldn't be having serious problems that this might be a result of. Well thanks for replying. I'm glad to know this has happened to someone else and they are still OK! I think sometimes I worry way too much about health problems!

Hi....my 6 yr old son experiences the same thing you are all talking about. It started when he was 4. He awoke one morning and just fell on the floor. He tried to stand again and he fell again. This lasted for a full day, he could not put pressure on it. It does still continue to this day but far less frequently. I took him to the pediatrician who basically said he was faking it. Needless to say, I went to other doctors, all of which have no answers for me. This past May he awoke with another episode of whatever this is and we took him to the ER. The ER diagnosed him with a muscle strain. He has had xrays on his foot, lower leg, thigh and pelvic region on his left side. I am at my wits end. My son has now started flag football and I notice when they take laps he is lagging behind the other boys and kind of limp/hops. In all other aspects of his life, he is a normal 6 yr old boy. If anyone is out there who can help, please do!! Thanks!!!!

sometimes I think the people here actually want to have something serious. an experienced physician knows certain symptoms are not signs of anything serious. why have lots of tests for every symptom?

You need to have testing done to pinpoint a possible problem ,thats why. This does not sound like something minor and really needs to be looked into for a possible cause.you do not normally just all of the sudden lose control over a limb and fall to the floor.and as far as those so called "experienced" Drs? Trust me here on this one, they don't know everything.i have a lesion in my spinal cord that was wreaking absolute havoc to other parts of my body and my first neurosurgeon, who was very experienced, could not seem to make the connection to the angioma inside my cord and the horrid neuro symptoms and pain i was having.I finally(out of sheer desperation)had my primary give me another referral to see a different NS at our local university,he has twenty years of experience and is the head of neurosurgery, and was able to make the connection in about five minutes into my visit.(he told me the cause before i even asked him)I think that all of you who posted with the same leg problem ,really need to have an MRI done on your spine to see if there is something going on with regard to a cause for this sudden paralyzation. It really does sound to me to be nerve related.Believe me, you have no clue as to just what is lurking inside your body until you take a good look with the right testing.I had no clue that this angioma was just hangin out up there inside my cord at the C-7,T-1 level until i had an MRI done to determine where my herniated disc was.it just happened to show up on the films. From the research I have done on it, it seems to appear mostly in the fourth decade of life(when it starts to show its first symptoms)I was 41 at the time.
Sometimes, you really have to push things with your doc.If he/she wont co opporate, find another doc who will, and really cares.I am very lucky in that my primary doc,who i have been seeing for about the last thirteen years, believed me when i told him something was just "not right".He was also very supportive when I found out that i was going to have to have it removed.I was absolutely terrified, but I had to do it, knowing that is was definitely going to cause me alot of damage in the end.But i do not have to constantly worry that the little glob of vessels that had been lurking in the cord is going to start to bleed again and instantly paralyze me from the chest down. They weren't able to remove all of it, but they did get most of it.
Sorry to ramble there but i cannot stress enough the importance of finding the cause of your problem. You just do not know what is lurking inside you until you take a look in there.Good luck,Marcia
