Hey, im a teenager in high school and i have a problem thats been making me really depressed lately.
Since last january, ive heard kids in my class talking about that something smells like butt. AFter many hints and clues, ive realized that the odor is coming from me, but i rarely can smell the odor im producing. Ive checked my butt, and there is nothing there, i wipe it, there nothing there, i wear deodorant, cologne and its still there. Its really embarrassing because kids sit away from me, and will talk to the other kids in my class and tell them that i smell, I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO. Its ruining my life. when i come out of a shower, i smell myself, and wipe myself, and im fine, but once at school, it smells bad, and i dont know how to get rid of it. I never had this problem, until January, PLEASE HELP ME, iF U HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM< OR IF U HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS~ depressed and smelly kid

Do you have a pet at home? If you do, check your shoes. I had a cat that urinated in my shoes once. It took me days to finally figure where the horrible pee smell was coming from. I thought it was me!
If it's not your shoes (that's the only thing that doesn't get washed alll the time) then ask your parents if they can help you find where the odor is coming from. I wish I could be more help.

I don't mean this in any offensive way but could it be just foot odor? (feet don't smell good anyway) and some people's feet produce more odor than others for some reason. You might try putting some activated charcoal inserts in your shoes (Dr. Scholls) or if you want to go the economy route, just try sprinkling a little baking soda or corn starch in your shoes before you go to bed at night. It could also be scalp odor or maybe you stepped in something on your way to school and that's what people are smelling. You mentioned that they said it smelled like "butt"...do you have a dog or cat?...is there one on your route to school?. IF it's not any of these things, then perhaps it's just "you" and there is nothing you can do about it. I mean, some people just have an "odor" about them and although they can't help it, it's just "there". It's a shame people judge you by how you look, smell, what brand of shoes you wear, how thin/fat/tall you are, etc. People can be pretty cruel and judgemental but it's just part of the whole "experience" here on earth I guess. Good luck.

Could it be your breath, sometimes its hard to tell what ones own breath smells like...
Can you ask a one of your parents to help you out with this?
Might it be the types of food you eat, very spicy or with lots of garlic?

It might be your diet. Sometimes certain foods or spices can be excreted with sweat and leave and nasty smelling odor. Also cats will do the same thing too. Our cat rinated on my husband's hunting clothes one day and he kept telling me the guys were giving hima hard time about how he smelled. I smelled his clothes and it was definately the same odor of our cats urine. If it is coming off of you then try changing your diet. If that doesn't work then visit your dr and explain what is going on with you and he should be able to help you out.-Roni
I also wanted to add that leaving your clothes in the washer for a long period of time before putting them in the dryer will leave a smell(similar to rotten egg) and it is impossible to make it go away after several washes. We found that out when we left out of town for one day and forgot to put the wash in the dryer.
This usually happens when well water is being used.

You know most people have butt odor. I thought I had it too, so one day I asked my friends if I stunk and all of them said I didn't I asked a doctor about it and he said that you can smell yourself more than anyone, so here's my advice ask your friend who you know won't lie to you about it. I hope I helped! good luck! :)

It may just be an assumption but does Jewish22 mean you are Jewish. If so maybe there are spices you are using for cooking possible. My sister is dating someone whos background is Syrian and she is finding she does not want to even kiss his without brushing his teeth fressly because he cooks with some spices she cannot stomach. Just a guess? Don't mean to souns offensive at all. Sandra

Do you bathe daily? Do you wash yourself well with a deodorant soap? Do you wash your bottom very well with warm, soapy water? Do you always put on fresh, clean underwear? Are you clothes clean? Do you wash your hair daily?
There are lots of things that could make you smell. If you do all of the above, I cannot see how you could smell like "butt".

Do you bathe OR do you shower?? If you only take showers, try soaking in a tub once or twice a week. If you will notice, suppose you had something smelly in a plastic container - if you just washed it out, it will still smell, however if you SOAK it in soapy water the odor goes away - same for a body (feet and butt)

Definately it could be your clothes, my daughter (she's 16) sometimes has forgotten and left the clothes in the washer, then she went ahead and put them in the dryer not thinking they may be sour and the least bit of perspiration makes that smell even worse. One thing i have tried and works great wash your clothes with a cup of plain white vinegar and still use your washing detergent, i also use fabric softener and the dryer sheets and i have had people ask me "tell me exacly how you wash your clothes cause they smell good" lol my husband plays softball and some of the guys have even made remarks about how much you can smell the detergent or the fabric softnener....Definately smells better than musty sweaty softball uniforms.

if it's a problem with your underarms and you sweat a lot:-
once you come out of the shower wipe your under arms but don't spray anything on just yet. lye down on your bed for 5 minutes or a bit more. after 5 min. wipe your underarms again and spray some deodorant (try some anti-perspirant spray).
I can't remember the science of it correctly but a doctor on tv said it levels out some chemicals in your body if you do this after every time you have a shower it should stop you sweat as much.

Jewish22,
Your problem sounds exactly like something I had to deal with when I younger. People always made comments about how bad I smelled, yet when I smelled my underarms and other locations on my body, there was no stench at all. I showered daily (often twice), spending a great deal of time working on my hygiene. The comments still came through.
It turned out to be my breath. Due to several conditions which are better described in the "Bad Breath has ruined my personality" thread, I was basically breathing out what smelled like sewage. I couldn't smell it at all, I would cup my hands and do a breath test, and there would be absolutely no odor. It was apparent after a while though that others could smell it, and it was horribly offensive. I made rooms smell horrible, just from sitting in them and breathing, minding my own business.
It's not your typical after dinner bad breath, mind you. It's caused by an infection somewhere in the body that isn't located in or around the mouth -- I'd brush my teeth for 20 minutes some mornings, and still the comments were made. Ask someone you care about (and someone who WILL tell you the truth) to smell your breath, both from your mouth and from your nostrils. That should give you a clear indication of whether or not your problem stems from what I described.

Some people just have an unusual body chemistry, I think, that causes them to smell unpleasant.
I second what another poster said, if you take all the steps and bathe often and correctly, it's hard to see how you would smell this way.
Another thought, are you overweight? I knew someone once who was, and as far as I knew had good hygiene, but had that smell. Has something to do with excess body weight. What about vaginal yeast infections?
How is your diet? Is it pretty healthy? Not a lot of "junk" food?
Certain liver or kidney problems can be a cause of unpleasant body odor. Have you had a physical lately?
I also have read that taking simple chlorophyll tablets from the health food stores, will be a natural deodorizer for your system, it couldn't hurt you to try it.
Good luck.

Prespiration is basically odorless, but bacteria and odor coming from other sources are the real culprits. Anaerobic bacteria will flourish when the body does not have enough oxygen, and may be cause of body odor. When the body's metabolism works, it gives off odors in process of ridding the body of waste products.
The body rids itself of toxins and that may cause body odor. Our body is bombarded with toxins in our homes, food, and air that accumulate in the body when the organs of elimination cannot dispose of them. The liver or intestines may be clogged, casusing odors to emanate from the body.
Dietary imbalances may result in constipation or deficiency of magnesium or zinc and may cause body odor. A person's body chemistry may give off body odor when they eat meat or vegetarians. Sometimes foods cannot be metabolized properly, such as those containine choline, such as eggs, fish, liver, and legumes. This will result in a "fishy" smell. Certain foods and drinks will cause body odor.Onions, garlic, curry, certain spicy foods, coffee and alcohol are prime causes. Fried and baked goods may contain rancid fats and oils that cause body odor.
Sweat glands under the arms and in the groin area secrete a substance that is the major non-food/drink caused body odor. This substance contains protein, carbohydrates and lipids are secreted by a surge in sex hormones casused by tense moments or emotional stress and are quickly attacked by bacteria.
There masy be underlying causes of excessive sweating, such as low blood sugar, liver disease, diabetes, parasites, metabolic dysfunction, menopause, or emotional stress. Sweat may be on forehead, palms, soles of feet or the underarms.
Kidney disease, liver disease, fungal infections, refined sugar feeds bacteria and fungus on the sking.
For underarm odor try using a solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%), 1 teaspoonful in a glass of water and wash the underarm. If this does not work, increase amount of hydrogen peroxide.
If toxic overload is the cause, take steam baths or saunas frequently to help detoxify.
Daily bathing, change in diet, and changes in clothes will help. Bathing daily will remove bacteria from the skin, especially the armpits and groin areas. Scrubing with soapy washcloth works better than soap on hands. Soaking 15 minutes in tub with 3 cups tomato juice will help eleminate body odor.
Avoid tight fitting clothes, need air to circulate around body to keep it dry. Bacteria thrives in a warm moist area.
Here are some things that may help: Magnesium, chlorphil tablets, vitamin A & B, zinc, alcohol/witch hazel wipe armlpits with alcohol, white vinegar or witch hazel instead of deodorant. Alum under arms, Apple cider vinegar may help (bacteria can't live in low pH). Baking soda is odor-eating....I used this for long time after becoming allergic to deodorants. Bauxite crystal deodorant works., Parsley/alfalfa chewing parsley helps neutralize body odor.
Good luck on finding the cause and cure.

My first thought when I heard of your problem was that it was stemming from your mouth, meaning your breath. While there are many scents to bad breath, one of them is the smell of feces. I'd definitely ask somebody if that's the problem, however, I know how embarassing that can be. I hope all works out for you and trust me, I know how you feel. I've been suffering with bad breath for ten years. It's crippling.
