I am getting very desperate and would so greatly appreciate any help from anyone concerning this condition. I spent 2 weeks at Mayo Clinic getting the following tests which ALL came back normal. CT w/contrast, MRI, bone scan, EMG, xrays, bloodwork. This is my problem. I have a bulge on my right hip that is directly over the hip point. I have had 6 different Rx's for anti-inflammatory and 4 cortisone shots. The muscles here are very sore and I can't lay on that side. It's not bursitis. It's not a tumor. The only test left more me to take is an arthrogram. But I am so upset everytime someone tells me the results are "normal" that I can't bring myself to make the appt. Can someone out there please help me? Have you had a problem like this? Thank you for listening to me ramble. I'm sorry, it's just I've had this for 5 months now and it's all getting the best of me.

Wow!
Not familiar with your problem, but sounds like you've already eliminated the serious possibilities.
You may have a muscle "knot" over your hip causing the bulge & pain. If so, perhaps you might consider consulting with a certified massage therapist to see if he or she could break down the knot with a deep massage program.
Sorry, that's all I can think of.

Thank you for the idea. I think you might have a point there. For some reason my pain has been decreasing over the last 2 days. My only problem is at night. But I think it has at least stopped swelling. I really do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Thanks much!

Hello
This is a long-shot, but it could be something to speak to your doctors about.
For months I had increased pain and soreness of my hip. It got to the point that my leg would give out and I would lose my balance. Ihad an MRI, that demonstrated possible AVN..Avascular Necrosis. I had to resort to using a cane at first, now for four months, I have used a walker.
After seven months of pain medication, that did not work, I was referred to a specialist, who diagnosed me with AVN for real.
AVN is a degeneration of the Femoral Head (hip joint). I am scheduled for surgery August 25th to replace my femoral head with metal on metal process.
I encourage you to seek help from a rehabilitation , orthopedic specialist, and have another MRI taken along with regular bilateral hip x-rays.
Good Luck to you

I have just gone through something similar, though mine stemmed from a car accident. All the test came back normal, till the last one. My orthopedic ordered a bone scan, turns out that I have a slight case of bursitis now but the biggie, I now have tendonitis in my hip. Cortisone shots, heat for pain and ice packs for the swelling are what I am getting now. And, it is actually starting to work. I wish you luck.

Shera khan--
I have a few questions for you? Do you happen to drink a lot of caffeine, like soda's, coffee, or anything else that contains caffeine? The reason why I ask is, because caffeine depletes calcium and you may have a calcium depletion in that area! If so, try taking some calcium pills. You can't get enough by drinking/eating dairy products, or even OJ. Another thing you may want to look into is taking Flax oil. Flax oil is great for joint pain, I take mine everyday (I'm a runner). I will tell you, the oil isn't the best tasting stuff, but tastes like walnuts, however I'd rather not have any pains. I take it w/ my vitamin's and drink V8 or OJ to chase it. Also, don't be disturbed by the amount of fat in the oil. This is the type of fat that you burn. It's noted that if you take 3 tablespoons a day, will help w/ weight loss.
I thought I would throw those suggestions out there. Good Luck and hopefully you will find out what is causing the problem!

Wow, you guys are great! Thanks for all the tips! I just finished making my last appt with Mayo to take an arthrograph of my hip. See, when I lay on the floor
and put the foot of 1 leg ontop of the knee of the other (figure 4 position) I can't bring down the affected leg. I feel "blocked" in my right hip. Kinda like, when I try to sit Indian style on the floor. THe
good leg (left) allows me to almost put that knee to the floor, but the right ....geez, I can't bring that puppy down there to save my life.
I love your suggestions and will try them. I suppose I should keep this test appt though, just in case.
Does that sound good?

Have you tried shoes with arch & ankle supports, Try a hiking shoes for a week.
If your shoe soles wear on the outside or inside edge you may need some correction pads in you shoes.
The feet can cause knee & hip pain.

Hi,
Just a thought or two:
Sometimes the tendons around my right hip slip out of place and will cause immense pain and limitation of movement. If I let that go, the pain will eventually be unbearable to the point where I can't do much. The only thing that helps me is to have my chiropractor "crick" that part of my hip and low back back into place. After a while, I learned which way to turn my hip to reposition my tendon myself. Sometimes however, I will need a deeper movement to help settle things, and I will go back to my chiropractor.
The other thing that I get severe hip pain from is when I misalign a facet joint in my lower back. This is not as severe as slipping a disc, but the pain is just as bad! The hip pain that comes from that is referred pain, but can be extremely limiting and extremely painful. Again, usually a quick visit to my chiropractor takes care of it. Followed with a little heat.
Wishing you the best.

td225,
I have just been diagnosed with bursitis of my right hip and sciatica (paraformis muscle). I was also put on bextra (a big nothing!) No shots yet. I wake up in pain and live in pain. I have a TENS machine which helps but my job requires lots of walking and standing and I am almost crippled by the end of the day.
My mother has had cortisone shots in her knees (for osteo arthritis) and for 3 days after was swollen and in acute pain. I can't afford that time off work.
I also have the complication of Sciatica (piraformis muscle problems).
I'm trying to use the TENS instead of painkillers and useless Bextra but I'm becoming very frustrated.
Two years ago I was active and in no pain. What has happened to me! I'm 47 yrs old and have 2 active kids to keep up with.
Has anyone had any success stories? I am also scheduled for a bone scan and MRI. What use is knowing what the problem is if it can't be fixed?
How much longer can we take this chronic pain?...Tagger

Tagger,
It's no cure, but try ice massage on the bursitis in the hip and if you can, try not to sleep on that side for a while and don't overexercise that joint. I got sciatica in my right side last year and then I started walking every day on the treadmill. Got rid of the sciatica and exchanged it for bursitis. When you have sciatica, you should not sit too long, stand too long, etc. I feel for ya. I have my battles every day. Good luck.

I believe the medical professionals are reading the bb posts. My ortho doc has changed by bursitis diagnosis to sciatica probelms. My prescription has been changed to Vioxx and I've been given physical therapy. I hope this makes a difference.
