A couple of years ago, I "mashed" my hand pretty bad in a 'blading fall. Altho very painful initially, I did not seek medical treatment (and still have not), thinking there were no broken bones, just a fairly bad mangling of tissue and muscle. ALtho I was wearing "hand guards", my hand was at a right angle to the pavement and my rib cage came down directly on my hand, so my hand "buckled" to some extent. Anyway, the pain transformed into stiffness and soreness, which worsens as time goes by, and is worse at times, and I was thinking that it was likely arthritis, and have been "treating" it as such. But, lately I have wondered if it might actually be a case of bursitis, and also have noticed that if I indulge in alchohol that the condition is considerably worse the next day. Any knowledgeable experts out there that might be able to clue me into what I should be attempting to treat??? Oh, should point out that the main pain and stiffness emanates solely from inside the two joints of the leftmost and rightmost fingers. And, likely should add that a "horse liniment" concoction of oils of eucalyptus, soy, emu, rosemary, clove, perpermint, lavender, tocopherol, and aloe vera does seem to alleviate the pain, soreness, and swelling to some extent....

Thanks for the reply, but can't afford medical right now. Also, thought that I should post back and clarify that the pain and stiffness emanates from BETWEEN (not necessarily "inside") the joints of the KNUCKLES of the innermost and outermost fingers, and that there is also some slight swelling in the knuckle joint of the rightmost finger (of the left hand...). Anyone else?

There is no doubt that you should seek medical advice as soon as possible. Meanwhile maybe a Panadol three times a day will help somwhat with inflamation caused by irritated tissue.
Gentle massage with the liniments you mention will not harm and maybe you could practice gently squeezing a tennis/squash ball a few times a day for some excerise. Hope it helps.

You do need to see a doc and get this checked out. You state that you don't have the money yet you can afford to buy all those supplements to make linament to put on it and you also mention it is worse the day after you have gone out drinking. I think your priorities are messed up here............if you can afford all of these then you can afford to get your hand checked out at the docs office.

It might seem that way on the surface if you don't really know the situation, but I am without health insurance, without income, and without much money.

The concoction of oils was pre-made and was less than $20, and I don't "go out" drinking, too expensive, mostly just imbibe when problems become overwhelming and need to "lighten up", like having a couple of beers during a football game.

Conversely, my guess is that medical diagnosis and tests and treatments would run into minimally hundreds and likely thousands of dollars.

All I am looking for here is some insight on what particular affliction I am faced with from anyone that might have some expertise in this area. Mainly, is it possible that maybe it is something other than arthritis?

Thanks for the skepticism; I thought that this was a forum where you could count on some help instead of judgemental criticism...

ezhb,

Have you looked into community resources/health and welfare, etc. in the area where you live? Perhaps listed in the gov't/blue pages of the phone book. There was a time in my life when I was having some chronic pain from a prior injury. At the time I was unemployed and uninsured. State assistance is something you may wish to look into. If you're under 21 it's easier to get but still, it's worth a look into.

As for your symptoms it's possible you had a break that healed incorrectly. There are several(7) bones in the wrist and one or more out of alignment could be a possibility. Tendinitis is another maybe and then like your first suspicion, possibly bursitis.

My recommendations would be to look into community resources, take anti-inflammatories such as Motrin and perhaps an ACE wrap or something could help with the discomfot in the interim. Good luck! Hope you can get the help you need.
