View Full Version : Does anyone know of any truly hypoallergenic dog breeds?

I want to get a dog so badly. Three out of four people in my household are allergic to dander. I've heard of some breeds that produce little or no dander, but there are no guarantees. I would hate to get a dog, and have to get rid of it due to allergies. My goal is to adopt one, through a rescue shelter. If I find a breed that would suit my needs, maybe I could call around to locate one in a shelter. I prefer not to spend hundreds of dollars on a dog. I think there are too many destroyed each year as it is. And, yes, I WOULD definitely have it spayed or neutered. I think it is the only right thing to do, I'm not interested in breeding a dog, just getting one for companionship. I appreciate any replies!

Hi,,The only dog I know about is a poodle,,a lot of people who are allegert to animals can be around poodles,,,they have next to no dander,,,,There should be a shampoo a person can get for dogs to help keep dander now..
Good Luck

This may sound strange, but I have been allergic to cats and dogs all my life. We wash our cat in distilled water once a month to remove the dander. This works better than any shampoo or dander wipe. It probably works for dogs as well. Also try Bichon friese. They are supposed to be lighter on the dander like poodles.

This may sound funny, but have you considered one of the many hairless breeds? Good luck and tell us when you have your new hound! :)

Best wishes,

Rachael

Lori-Lynn,

Is your son allergic to dog dander, though? You said he does well with the Poms, but you also said he takes shots, so I wondered if the shots were for dog allergies.......

My oldest boy's allergist wanted to start him on shots, including dog serum, even though we (still) don't have a dog. A lot of his friends have dogs, though, and he's so very allergic that he has trouble at their homes. We opted not to go with the shots. He now takes Claritin D for seasonal allergies.

I'm STILL a little leary about adopting a dog. I would just hate it if we DID have reactions, because I know we'd bond with the dog very quickly.....

Hi Victoria , my son is like allergic to everything , cats, dogs , grass , trees, etc. yes he takes shots but only once a month , he has no other problems with having a dog , which is great i thought he"d be allergic really bad but we have no problems , he also was on claritin before he was put on serum . He use to receive shots every week but the longer he was on serum , his body was getting use to the allergy and now he receives shots once a month , my allergists said some kids grow out of allergies after being on serum the body becomes immune , sorta fixes its self from being allergic with the help over time taking the serum.good luck in your search for a dog hope you can find a suitable breed , poms are great dogs though . take care ,LORI
