View Full Version : How common is it to get local before an IV?

When I had surgery in March I was given a shot of local before they stuck the IV in (and it took something like three tries for them to find a good vein). It was wonderful as I am terrified of needles!

Now, I may be having surgery sometime next year and was wondering how common it is to get local before an IV. I have had three surgeries prior to this last one and wasn't given any local (all the same surgeon and he had in-office operating rooms).

Would it be wrong to request local? It really, really made me much less nervous because local needles barely hurt.

Thanks.

Shell,
I don't know how common it is to get a local before an IV is started. I've had 2 IVs in my lifetime and didn't have a local for either one. Thank goodness they hit their mark on the first try both times!

When I had an IV in office for a outpatient procedure I was not given a local and it hurt very much...when in the hospital I was given a local...ask for it if not offered!!!

Some nurses give locals some don't. I don't see why they would not give you one if you asked. I am sure they would.

Best wishes :)

Thanks, if I do end up needing surgery I'll be sure to bring that up.

when you say local do you mean the cream? with small IV cannulae if you are experienced it won't be very painful

with local given by needle it hurts as much or more as the cannula going in unless it is a 16gauge or bigger
