I went to my Dr. and he told me that I have bronchitis with a little bit of wheezing. He prescribed doxycycline (antibiotic), and Prednisone (20 mg). I need to be on the prednison for 5 days. Take one tablet every other day. Has anyone else taken Prednisone for a short period? Did you have any bad side effects? The reason I ask is because I have acid reflux and take Prevacid. I also have irregular heartbeats (taken nothing for that). I read where Prednisone may speed up your heart rate. Is this true? If any one has taken before, would like your opinion or if you experienced anything.

I have taken prednisone tabs, low dose for a week with no problems at all. You shouldn't either, especially since you are taking a tab every other day.

I checked out drug interactions for you and if you are otherwise healthy, Prevacid will not, nor does NOT have clinically significant interactions with drugs such as warfarin, antipyrine, indomethacin, ibuprofen, phenytoin, propranolol, prednisone, diazepam, clarithromycin, or terfenadine.

So you should be okay. Prednisone usually causes problems with long term use and massive doses.

Thank you Zuzu, your reply makes me feel better about taking the meds. I'll let you know how it goes. To tell the truth I was waiting for a reply before I started taking the Prednisone. I am such a chicken when it comes to meds I know nothing about. I always read the adverse reactions, then I stress over them. I'll probably feel great after I take them. Thanks again!!

weesee, I have had only bad interactions with Prednisone. It may just be me, so it may be okay for you. It sped up my heart rate bigtime and scared me. Ever since (this was 20 years ago), I have included this med as one that I am "allergic" to. It may not classify medically as an allergy, but the side effects scared me. Again, you may not have a problem; just be careful and monitor the possible side effects for your body! I hope this helps! Dave

Thank you Dave. It's about 8:00 AM in Hawaii and I was just about ready to take my pill (first one) this morning because I really had a bad night with the wheezing last night, but am having second thoughts now. Reason being, I have irregular heart beats as it is, and I hate when my heart rate increases in any way. Some of my friends at work suggested that I cut the pill in half and take 1/2 every other day. I might try doing that. Thank you so much for your post. I will let all know what the outcome is.

weesee, did your doctor know about the irregular heartbeats before he prescribed the Prednisone? If he didn't, I personally would not take that medication until you have talked with him again. If he did, you may want to consider a second opinion. I am not trying to scare you, but I would hate for something bad to happen to you! God bless! Dave

Actually prednisone on a short course always made me feel like wonder woman. It's when you go off of it that you will be exhausted for a day or two. It will also make you very hungry.

Hi All,

Well, I tried the medicine yesterday morning and I actually had a good nights sleep. I did not have any adverse effects, but must admit to all that I did cut the pill in half, so I only took 10 mgs. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/redface.gif I do have some wheezing this morning though. :( The instructions on the script says one tab every other day after breakfast. My question to all is since I had no side effects yesterday, should I take the entire 20 mgs tomorrow morning, or continue to take the half every other day? My doctor told me if I don't feel better after a week, to come and see him again. To answer you Dave, he is aware of my irregular heartbeats, but was not concerned that this med would affect me. I thank all of you for your concern and help. It's so nice to have people who understand and talk to. Thank you all!

Weesee- If taking the full dose is making you anxious, please call the doctor...don't fool around and experiment with steroid dosages. If you are cutting it in half you may not get the full benefits of the drug and prolong, if not make the chest thing worse.
He's got you on a very low dose very short term, and there is a reason for you to take it every other day...so you don't get too much into your system too fast. This sounds like a good and careful doctor.
If you continue to take the incorrect dose every other day and it's not effective, you will have managed to make no dent in your recovery and have taken the prednisone (less than prescribed) for nothing!

I have heard that long term use will cause a womans bones to lose mass & become very weak.
