I'm 33 and have been suffering from overly dry skin for about 3 years. Mainly it has been a severe problem on my legs. I tend to scratch and scratch until I remove my own skin. Yuk! I'm embarrassed by the scars this leaves behind, and have developed a phobia about wearing shorts in the summer.

Try going to a dermatologist for a specialized cream. I see an advertizement on TV for a gold bond anti-itch cream. I don't know if it works, but if I was in your position I would try anything. There is a board here called skin, hair and nail problems. There is a lot of expertise there. Good luck, let me know how you are doing and what works for you... :p

Mich,
Dry skin can be a symptom of nutrition inadequacies. In particular, a deficiency of essential fatty acids (EFAs) in your diet can cause or contribute to dry skin. If you don't have enough fat in your diet then you can't manufacture enough oils to keep your skin moist. Eat more meat and fat, seriously. Eggs are good too. You might also try fish, sardines, fish oil, or cod liver oil supplements since these are high in essential Omega 3 fatty acids.
Whatever you do, cut back or eliminate highly processed polyunsaturated vegetable oils and especially partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (its in everything that is processed, baked, etc.)

Hello Mich!
I am a licensed esthetician and can offer a few suggestions. If you are using products for your dry skin please check the labels.
Products that contain mineral oil &/or lanolin can lead to skin problems. Unfortunately both are used often but there are products without so keep looking. Also it is extremely important to exfoliate as this removes dead skin cells and promotes new cell growth. Tea tree oil is great for irritated skin. Try putting a couple drops in a handful of cornmeal and rubbing it on your skin (great for face too). The grittiness of the corn meal and natural healing properties of the oil should make your legs feel better. Good Luck!!!!
