Hi guys,
I'm still trying to find something that will help me out with my sinuses. I've found alot of things from reading your posts. I'm going to ask my Allergist about nasal irrigation next.

Okay, so what helps you with your sinuses??????

In my other post I mentioned grape seed extract and nettles but I have also used a nettie pot to irrigate my sinuses, unpleasant but very effective.Increase the humidity in your home, hunt down any mold or mildew, buy a good air cleaner and good luck.

I've found that Flonase helps with sinus congestion to a certain extent; it doesn't make it go away but it brings some relief. The neti pot is messy, and I couldn't get used to it. I do use saline spray which keeps the nasal area moist.

Good luck.

Irrigation, irrigation, irrigation!! However it's done, as long as it is done. Zyrtec takes care of my allergies.

I have had a sinus infection for about 23 years--no kidding. About the only thing they haven't tried is IV antiboitics in the hospital or surgery--both because I do not have insurance! Sometimes, like now, the infection runs my body down so bad that I can scarcely get anything done at all. It keeps me awake at night with post-nasal drip causing a sore throat and choking. My doc keeps telling me that it will never go away till I get on a gluten free diet (I have celiac sprue)--which is another thing I can not afford!! I am getting ready for another course of Zithromax to knock it down some. Flonase etc, do not seem to help me. Garlic helps some.

After years and years of having stuffed up sinuses,no infections but I lived with closed nasel passeges and did the afrin thing. (never again) I am on flonase and alegra-d and man what a difference that made. I was also diagnosed with sleep apnea and snored alot. Well with the 2 medications I hardly need the cpap breathing machine for my apnea. Most of the problems were from the sinuses. Never realized how bad my sinuses were till I got on the alegra and flonase. No side affects either.

As a lifelong sufferer of allergies and sinus problems I have tried alot of approaches in 40+ years. Somethings help for a while, most things help little or not at all. This appears to be a very individualized kind of problem that is complicated by an interrelationship of many issues. Genetics, personal history, personal physiology (is your sinus structure impaired?), personal behavior (diet, bad habits), environment, stress. It can take some doing to unwind the threads.

What works for one may likely not work for others. Someone tells you that they had super results with homeopathic XYZ extract, great! --- for them.

I have been to alot of physicians and alternative folk for this problem, have received conflicting recommendations, and still haven't been helped. This reaffirms the complex nature of the problem.

The chronic nature of this condition wears away at one's will and hope; but you must be patient, renew your resolve and make a list of all the recommendations that you encounter. March through that list scratching off all the non-performers. And by all means, start with the most logical, least invasive of the approaches. Be aware that there may be no single "magic bullet". It may take a combination of things to end your quest.

And lastly, remember this (as I have posted elsewhere):
Regardless of what our culture would have us believe, physicians of any persuassion work for us. We have a right to have our problems given serious and full consideration regardless of how complicated and unyielding. We pay the bills, we pay for the insurance, we pay to support the medical infrastructure through government support. We do what we do so that doctors can do what they do. We all play a significant part.

Karen..I was in the same boat as you for 13 years. I don't know if anything would have alleviated any symptoms then; no medicine helped. But I wonder if irrigating would do you any good? I never tried it until I was 'cleared' out by surgery. But if you haven't tried it, I'd say it's worth a shot. It might just make you feel better enough to start seeing some light at the end of the tunnel!Just gotta try to get all that water back out once it's gone in! Also, I still can't keep away the infection (although it's almost unnoticeable now) but I recently started taking colloidal silver and using it in my irrigation and it seems to be making a difference. I also take garlic. Both are supposed to have antimicrobial effects so..fingers crossed. Anyway..must go. Good luck to you!

I would be reluctant to insert colloidal silver up my nasal passages. Irrespective of the concern over the side effect of argyria (which may not be an issue in this application), there are some professional concerns over the possible neurological impact of colloidal silver. The product itself is manufactured under a wide variety of standards and some samples have been found to have contaminants. Find out what type of infection(s) you are harboring then find a remedy of the highest purity, that has been used in nasal irrigation with positive results.

My sinuses have tortured me for the last 28 years, off and on. (Mostly on) These are the things that I have discovered help me: 1- Antibiotics. I think I would die if I didn't always have a stash hidden away for emergencies. An emergency is when I've tried everything I can think of for days and still can't get rid of the pain. Antibiotics ALWAYS work. 2- Dyazide. (Thank goodness I have borderline hypertension or I wouldn't know this.) 3- Claritin. My insurance won't pay for Claritin so I take Allegra. It's almost as good. 4- Tiger balm IN my nose. I know it burns, but I'm used to it. 5- Sinus concoctions from the health food store. 6- Have a busy and interesting life if possible. When I'm bored and lazy my sinuses are worse. 7- A steam machine I bought at Long's. You put your face in it and get a facial sauna. 8- Try not to sleep too much or late in the morning. An Actifed at night helps also. I hope this helps someone.

Hey karenortwein,

Have you tried allergy shots or can' afford it without insurance?
I am about to try that for my post nasal drip. I have the same problem with it running my body down so bad that I can't get anything done.

Nasal irrigation did nothing for me. It seems like it works for some people though. I am about to try allergy shots.
I think bluesea made some very important comments

Some more thoughts.......

If you pursue nasal irrigation, by all means use distilled water. I did not originally know this. There is always the possibility that your water source is contaminated (pseudamonas somethingoranother) even if it is a municipal water supply.

I am currently attempting to eliminate gluten from my diet. Also trying out an oral regimen of Collostrum supplement (boost immune response to overcome sinus infection). Antibiotics seem to provide a diminishing return. Will report back.
