Hi everyone,

I am doing great on the subox.. Unfortunately, I had 2 awful abcesses on the top sides of my mouth. I am having a rootcanal on Wednesday, and a tooth pulled soon. I talked to my subox Dr. and explained. She said that I can take the vikes (while moniterd)??????!!!!!!! I asked her about the drug that is in subox. She said that is only to keep people abusing the subox. I am so confused. I thought if you took the subox and then took the vikes you would go into w/d's? She said that even though I am an addict, that I do not have to suffer and that if I take the vikes, I will not feel any euphoric effects and will also not crave after stopping. Personally, I think, or rather know that I will not take the vikes. I have a high tolerance for pain. But all this goes against what I have read and heard. We are told to be in w/d's to start the med, or else we will experience fast w/d's if not in w/d. Yet. the dr. said I should just take them as prescribed (hahhahaha,I would not be in this trouble if I could do that
She told me to tell my DH, and bring her the bottle when done, to account for the pills, and also take peepee tests along the way? Am I missing something here? What do you all think Shell

With this exception, this dr. has been great in the counseling and communicating.

what the suboxone does is block the effect of opiates but with subox you really have to overdose yourself to get that high, if you are on subox then i doubt you are an IV user,no? But she is right, you will only go into ULTRA rapid detox if you try to crush and inject the pill because naloxone and buprenorphine are HCI based and can be readily soluble in water. Did she ever mention upping your dose of subox or using methadone until the pain has subsided?

This is the VERY reason I have taken so long to make a decesion about sub. Shell, I would be concerned to. It does go agaisnt everything you/I have heard or read about sub. Im just glad this board is here for people to LEARN before the JUMP. Yeah, I thought that was rather funny about telling you to "take as precsribed"....I still think people don't know enugh about addictions/addicts to honestly help us. If we could do that we wouldn't be here!!! I want to scream sometimes! I would go back to her/Doc and talk thru this again, don't NOT ask questions Shell your instincts are kicking in and you should listen to them. AllyQUOTE=Wakeupcall]Hi everyone,

Question for Spark--Do you remember anybody talking about the "numbness" some people were talking about on Sub? Also, I think they were having some tingling...falling asleep...etc. I have talked to a sub doc near me and if the taper doesnt work Im gonna bite the bullet and go. I still don't like the thought of Sub but I dont have a choice at this point. Im going to order online and try one more time to taper. When I go to the doc I wanta ask those questions. I still don't understand what this med does. I know it acts like an opiate because it is....but I have NO clue as to how you wean yourself off and with my track record I don't know if Im opening up a whole other problem. Anyway, thanks in advance for your help. Allythe reason they want you in mild w/ds win you start suboxone is so they can figure out the right doseage amount that you need.i know this from doin it that you can take opiates when you are takin suboxone and you will NOT go into w/ds.the opiates will help the pain issue some but forget about gettin a buzz cause it aint happenin so dont try to.if you can stand the pain dont take the opiates as it messes with the brain some and it doesnt know what to do when you take two different meds.you can eat 1000mg of oxy and you will not get a buzz while on the suboxone and it is easy to od so be carefull-spark

I know you won't go into withdrawals when you take the vikes because if you're taking the Suboxone properly, almost none of the naloxone gets absorbed sublingually so it acts exactly the same as subutex (suboxone without the extra ingredient) what I DON"T understand is how the Vikes can HELP you with your pain?? Since there is a blockade in the Sub., another opiate shouldn't have any effect at all. If you can find out why she thinks it would be beneficial to take the Vikes, I'd sure like to know. Thanks.

Here is a piece from a web site w/ a lot of Q&A's about suboxone/subtex asked to docs. in the US & France. I will ask permision from the Mod. to post a link to this site.

QUOTE:

Q. PAIN MANAGEMENT - Are guidelines available to physicians in the event a Buprenorphine-maintained patient experiences sudden, severe pain (trauma, dental abscess, etc.), or requires emergency surgery?

A. USA: Buprenorphine can be over-ridden with morphine, demerol, etc. Buprenorphine should be stopped during this period of acute pain management.

Hey ya'll,
i don't mean to add more confusion to this subject and it may just be people are "wired" differently and/or the dose your taking of the sub, but I started the subutex a month ago and most of you may remembered- I "slipped." I took several Norcos one afternoon after waking up with a headache and taking my sub that morning and the Norco did get rid of the pain and I did feel buzzed. Granted, I was not on a very high dose and this may not be the case for most people. It is all very confusing- the different stories. Reading this may me wonder though, how I was able to feel buzzed? I have not slipped since, so I can't compare any other instances to that- I don't know. How was it that I felt buzzed? Anybody?

I would imagine the reason why you still felt the opiate is because you were on a low dose. What dose were you on? I am on 10-12mgs and I don't feel them at all!! Even when I was on 8mgs. I didn't feel them.

Sharonver,
I was taking 8mgs when I slipped up and took the Norco's! Even though I felt the buzz, the guilt over taking them was what I "felt" the most. I am down to 4mgs just every now and then.

Hi Michelle,

8 mgs is probably the highest you could go to feel any opiate effect, and you were probably one of a very few lucky ones. I worry about my dose blocking an opiate if I had to have major surgery etc. You said you are taking 4mgs on & off? Does that mean that you are taking it every day? I am trying to get some input from people who are tapering off subutex. Thanks....

Hey Sharon,
I take the subutex sort of on an as needed basis- every two or three days. I did not want to get too dependent as I know I will have to come off this altogether eventually. I just think I got lucky as to being able to step off so quickly. (Knock on wook!) I did have to take one (4mgs) today- now watch me have to take another one tomorrow- ha, ha! Hope things are going well for you. Take care,
Michelle
