View Full Version : IVF not so good embryo progress

I had my first IVF done with a BFN preg test on 10/12. I went to the doctors on 10/30 to discuss what happened. He said my embryo's didn't progress correctly (not the way they like them too). He showed me diagrams and explained things to me.

Short recap: I had 7 follicles, 4 of them became embryo's, 1 was only a 4 cell embryo and the other 3 were fragmented. The doctor put all 4 back into me, but seemed very disappointed in the quality of the embryo's and I just knew it was not going to work.

He said sometimes this can be corrected simply by just finding the right meds and right doses to put me on. I asked him what the percentage rate was of this working with me and he basically said "stay positve, I see all kinds of things happend" And when I asked him if the med changes do not work on me and I just have bad eggs then what. He basically said "we'll cross that bridge when we get to it". I just don't feel too positive right now and I was wondering if anyone could share any story's or information with me that may help.

I'm so sorry Misof! Do you feel comfortable with this doctor? Maybe you could switch RE's? I haven't gone through an IVF cycle (three IUI's) yet - just preparing to now and this is one of my concerns because I'm a bit older. What about speaking with a counselor or just someone else in this field that might be able to set your mind at rest? I see you're in Wakefield - there are so many great facilities in this area - maybe you could just get a consultation from another source?

One consolation (sorry - I don't think it's even that!) is that I spoke with someone in this field just the other day who said that the first IVF is basically a gauge of how you will respond - I felt VERY negative after speaking with her, but I guess it's a good thing to know.

Good luck and if you need anything, please let me know.

I am so sorry to hear about your BFN -- but I agree with nick -- It won't hurt just to get a second opinion -- maybe if you did you may found out something more that may make you more positive. What you are going through now is my biggest fear -- I will be going through my first IVF at the end of the month.., I know its so hard but try to stay positive and DON'T GIVE UP ! Take some time for yourself -- know that you will be in my thoughts !!!

Thank you both for your responses. I think I do need to consult another RE. I love my doctor, but I have been given the same advice so many times that it seems like the thing to do.

I will keep you both in my thoughts. If you have any questions along the way feel free to ask them. I wish you both BFP!!!

Misof,

I know it must be frustrating. I have a friend who went thru 3 IVF's until it worked. I don't know what they did about changing her meds or how much was administered. I know that sometimes it can just be a long process. If something doesn't work, you move on to the next plan.

Is your doctor specialized in IVF? If not, maybe you could find someone who is. I know I'm not being much help, but I only hope the best for you.

Take care,

Lissie

Thank you Lissie, Any input is great for me to have. Wish I knew why the first two didn't work on your friend. Was it egg quality or no eggs or miscarriages, etc... I just hope it works this time on me, IVF number two. I started Accupuncture today but feel like "why bother" instead of having the hopeful feeling I used to have. I guess I am just feeling blah today. Tomorrow is a new day though :)

You are pregnant, right? How is everything going? Was it through IVF or IUI? I can not wait for the day that I am pregnant or we adopt! I just want the pitter pattering of little feet in my house.

Misof,

I know it's hard, but try to have positive thoughts. Believe it or not, my doctors always told me that. Negative energy and thoughts can have an effect.

I got pregnant thru IVF 2 years ago with my first, and am pregnant now from a frozen cycle with my second. I did have some problems with this one at first. I had some bleeding for about 3 or 4 days, and they thought I might be leading up to a miscarriage. Luckily, baby and me are fine now. 36I consider myself very lucky. IVF doesn't always work the first or 2nd time for everyone. I know that sounds discouraging.

My friends problem was a combination of a little bit of everything. She had only 1 tube that worked, her DH sperm was not all that strong, and I think maybe some other factors, but they were small, and I'm not sure what they were. They had to inject the sperm into the fertilized egg for the last attempt. That process seemed to be the one that worked.

Well, all that said, I wish you only the best!!!!! Please keep me posted. I know it helps to talk to others who go thru the same thing. I don't think the rest of the world understands infertility.

Hi Misof,
First I agree with everyone else. Seek a second opinion if you're not sure about your Dr.
I'm 40 and have been ttc for years. we tried Clomid for 6 months and then IUI twice and but found out that my egg quality wasn't very good. Apparantely my eggs are maturing faster than I am, which is making me feel pretty old! Anyway, our only option is donor eggs or adoption. After much research and soul searching we are trying the donor route. If you find that your eggs are not of good quality (which is a concern regarding birth defects) and want to discuss donor eggs, drop me a note on the boards.
Best of luck to you. I hope everything works out.
