Could be allergies, a chronic infection of the lacrimal glands, an infection of the punctal ducts that allow tears to drain or your tear glands aren't working properly [i.e. producing overly thick tears]. Try washing your eyes before bedtime using a mild saline solution.

There's a condition called dacryocystitis that includes these symptoms.

You could also have something called blepharitis, which is not quite as serious as what Jay Tor mentioned. The symptoms for that also include red, puffy eyelids (or redness around the eyes) and mucous around the eyes, especially in the morning. Try also using some tear drops, and using a hot compress to get rid of the mucous. See an opthalmologist if it doesn't go away, because you might need an anti-biotic drop. Also, if you do have what Jay Tor was talking about, then you should DEFINITELY see an opthalmologist right away!
