hi linda,
i have problems with my sleep - either i sleep too much or i cant sleep as much as i want to.
most of the time i sleep for abt 11-12 hours at night and then abt 2-3 hours during the day. at such times i feel i can sleep all day/night. what is especially difficult is getting out of bed in the morning. plus i feel tired and sleepy most of the day.
when i sleep less it is still about 11 hours at night with no naps during the day. but at such times i feel sleep deprived, i get headaches and wish i could sleep longer.
in either case the most difficult part is getting out of bed. i have to be woken up everyday at 1 pm. otherwise i probably will sleep longer.
this has been a problem with me since the last 8 years or so.

Are you currently being treated? They started me on Ritalin 20mg 3 times a day, I have been taking it for 6 days and it is starting to work I have not slept during the day for 3 days in a row. That is a record for me!!!!!!!!!! I too suffer from headaches daily but they too seem to be getting better.

hi
i have a lot of health problems and as a result i am currently taking a lot of medicines. taking more pills for my sleep issues is the last thing on my mind. as of now i have learnt to adjust my schedule according to my sleep patterns. plus i find that i can sometimes forcibly cut down to abt 11 hours of sleep a day which is not too bad. infact this week i am sleeping just 9 hours a day. ofcourse i feel awful, i get headaches and feel very sleep deprived, but i really want to stay away from more pills as far as possible.
i wanted to ask u if u ever have strange dreams where u are aware of your surroundings. usually theyre very scary and i always think im awake when im actually asleep. ive read up about it a bit - theyre called hypnogogic or hypnopompic hallucinations . ive been havng them ever since ive had sleep problems. and i read that some people with sleep disorders get them.
its nice to know that ure feeling better. do these pills cure the sleep disorder or will you have to take them long term? let me know more. any information will be appreciated!

I also have a diagnosis of IH. I was diagnosed back in January (great way to start the new year).
Are you being treated for your IH? I currently take Provigil (200-300 mg/day). I don't fall asleep at work anymore, and as long as I take it as soon as I get up in the morning it doesn't give me horrible insomnia. But I still sometimes want to sleep all day on weekends.

No medication can not cure a sleep disorder, but it will help us to function. I do not get the "dreams" like you talk about, but have read that some times it is seem with narcolepsy. One week being treated for IH and I am still feeling great, even my friends and family tell me I am much more like my old self. It feels great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The symptoms of Hypersomnia are, exssesive night sleeping with difficulty waking up, and exsesive daytime sleepiness, you don't feel refreshed when you wake up, if you go to sleepnet.com it will explaine it better. I saw my doctor who sent me for a sleep stud. It is not a bad test, basicaly you sleep and they have all these wires attached to you to monitor you. They diagnose you by the results, narcolepsy and hypersomnia have alot of the same symptoms and are treated the same way but it is important to get a proper diagnosis.

Yes ritalin is a simulant, it keeps me awake and focused during the day, but does not affect my sleep at night. If you take it too close to bedtime it will.
