Sounds like gallstones...have this checked. Can cause severe pain, and will come and go...Can also cause lots of complications if you wait..Sarge

Gallstones cannot usually be seen unless you have an ultrasound of the gallbladder. I don't know if they can detect it with a blood test or not. I went for about 7 years before I found out what was wrong, there is also a test that can tell you how much your gallbladder is working and what %.....try to have this done, and it will tell you whether or not you have stones...any ??? post, and I will reply. First, you can have a diseased gallbladder without having stones. Blood work is a good first step to check for problems. If you have a gallbladder infection, your white blood cell count will be high. You can also have blood tests to check on your bilirubin, liver enzymes (aspartate and alanine and alkaline phosphatase) and pancreatic enzymes. If the levels are high, it could point to a biliary tree problem which inludes the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. The liver stores bile in the gallbladder. The gallbladder takes the bile and the pancreas takes it's juices and pumps them into your small intestine (duodenum) as part of the digestion process. If the gallbladder has stones, it could block the bile from being released and could also cause bile to go back into your liver. This would affect your liver enzymes. Gallstones can also cause elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase which are very specific in identifying gallstone pancreatitis. So there isn't a specific blood test for gallstones. The tests are used to help determine what is causing your discomfort. The enzyme levels I mentioned can also be increased by a variety of other factors and not just by gallstones.
Diagnostic imaging is the best method for finding gallstones. The tests include an ultrasound and a HIDA scan. I assume you know what an ultrasound is. The HIDA scan is where a nuclear dye is injected into a vein and you lie under a machine that monitors the flow of the nuclear material. The radiologist looks to see how well the material flows through your gallbladder. Stones can also be seen on the scan. There is also a hormone that can be injected to but I don't have much info on that.
The diagnostic tests aren't 100% on finding stones. Some people have the tests performed more than once before the problem is found.
Good luck!
