So he put you on flagyl....probably not the first thing that is normally chosen for a urinary tract infection--which it does sound like you have. Have you ever been tried on:
Septra?
Trimethoprim by itself?
Macrodantin (Macrobid)?
Ciprofloxacin?
Cefotaxime?
These are drugs that are normally used to treat UTIs....I'm not knocking your doctor in any way, but I'm wondering why you weren't put on one of those drugs first...well...one thing...do you have an allergy to sulfa drugs?
The thing with urinary tract infections is that the drug that is being used to treat it must excreted in its active form in the bladder. The drugs that I've mentioned above do that well...perhaps flagyl does, I don't know, but I do know the ones above are much better choices.

Hi there
Obviously, your doc doesn't think you have a UTI, which is why he didn't use any of those other antibiotics.
He thinks you have Bacterial vaginosis, caused primarily by Gardnerella vaginalis The treatment of choice for this is metronidazole (Flagyl). However, this is usually characterised by a 'fishy discharge'.
The reason it is happening around your period as your doctor has said, is due to pH changes, which are brought on by the hormonal changes at that time of the month. When the pH in the vagina changes, the normal bacteria are killed off, giving bugs such as gardnerella a chance to grow and cause problems.
Sometimes it's pretty difficult to figure out if you have a UTI or a vaginal infection, because both will sting like crazy when you wee!
Hope you get better soon

*************What you say makes sence he did mention that I had or thinks I have Gardnerella......and when I did some looking up the Flagyl, it said for Gy problems..so not sure, My question is still (today) I am home, from work the pain is still very seviour, especialy when I pee.....and How do I prevent this from happening again every month(has not been this seviore). is there an over the counter pill, for something or anything.... thanks for all the help so far....
the other thing to try is probiotics, certain strains of bacteria which will help this sort of problem
c8cristy 11-12-2003, 02:11 PM
Becouse it's hurting and i was at the Dr on Monday.......now there are 2 bumbs like zits or ingrown hairs right at the top were the lips meet..he is now thinking Herpes...what the heck......he said again that there is nothing in my Irin, but we will see today I am going back in..... will message again when I know.....

Whatever it is, I hope it gets better soon, it sounds miserable.
By probiotics, I think jodo means eating things like bioyoghurt or you could take supplements such as Acidophilus, which you should be able to get from a health food shop.
its got to be particular strains to definetely be beneficial
pandagirl 11-12-2003, 04:37 PM
Lactobacilli are normally found in the vagina in large numbers and it is those strains which produce hydrogen peroxide that prevent the overgrowth of organisms such as gardnerella. Most probiotic preparations will contain several types of lactobacilli (such as Lactobacillus acidophilus) :)

Pandagirl, you are right on target. A simple gram stain read by a microbiologist would diagnose the problem. A fishy smelling discharge along with the observation of "clue" cells plusa very large number of gram varible bacilli is diagnostic for bacterial vaginosis.
Gardnerella vaginalis plus the synergistic effect of anarobes is the most likely cause of BV.
The last i heard is Flagyl is the drug of choce. In adition, it will treat Trichimonas.

Thanks for the welcome. Maybe I should tell you all about myself. I have always been fascinated with microbiology, but i was forced to retire because i have Parkinson's disease. I might forget a few things, but it is a goof workout of my brain.
I sm some times a little impulsive about posting, but i was a member of the ASM and thr hospital where i worked allowed me to attend the national meeting every year. It was like being among the "gods" of micriobiology, but it never intimadated me to talk to them and ask questions. Unfortuneately, i wish i could remember all that i learned.
One big thing i learned was the average doctor araound here doesn't or can't keep up with infectious diseases.
Of course, many hospitals have eliminated most of the meetings. Big mistake!

Hi Bruce,
Hope you don't think I am being picky, this is just an observation. Your spelling of Trichomonas, is that a UK / USA difference?
Sorry to hear you had to retire due to ill health.
Take care

Hi,
I'm not an expert on this or anything, so take it for what it's worth. But I have heard a lot of women talk about "yogurt douches". It neutralizes the ph balance? Plain yogurt though, not the fruity kind. :) Supposedly it does work. I have never tried it myself, I just thought I'd pass my hear say along to you.
I hope you feel better. Us ladies have enough to deal with already, things like this just don't make things any easier. :nono:
Best Wishes...
