I have IBS-D and I tried the acidophilus caps for abt 6months but didnt really help with my symptoms although it didnt make it worse either. Ive read on this board though that acidophilus has helped some ppl, so Id say its worth a try. For a couple of weeks now Ive been drinking actimel yoghurt drink which I didnt really think would help, but I can honestly say my symptoms of gas and bloating etc have almost gone, some days I can forget I even have IBS.

If your intestinal bacteria gets out of balance--- you can have yeast overgrowth as well as digestive problems. THe bacteria can get out of balance for many reasons from a round of antibiotics to too much sugary or salty or spicey foods, alcohol and the list goes on!!!
Some bacteria aids digestion and passes through and some re-colonizes your intestines. There are over 400 different bacteria that have been ID'ed in your intestines. Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of those and a very inportant one but by far not the only one.
Some good probiotic supplements on the market are PB-8, Kyodophilus, Primal Defense, Flora Source, Primadophilus w/Reuteri.
Also, there are some good yogurts that contain 4 to 8 different bacteria cultures that you can buy at most health food stores. I think Stonyfield Farm is a very good brand.
