This may be a stupid question but is Sulfa an antibodic? I keep reading the two words in the same line but am not sure.

On its own, no it is not, but there are a range of antibiotics known as Sulphonomides that do contain this and they are known by trade names such as Septrin, so yes, sulphur is a component of antibiotics but not the only one.

I have to say that I would be very careful with these, as they are very strong and can cause a lot of allergic reactions and docs tend to prescribe other things in preference now, unless absolutely indicated.

I remember years ago being given Septrin by my doc for a severe chest infection. I took it for a week and by the end of the week was covered from head to toe in a rash and then had to take Piriton to help the rash. That was in the days before I knew any better and I have not taken it since, so be careful.

Yes, be very carful with the sulfer type antibotics. I took last week 6 pills of Biaxin and found that I'm now suffering an allergic reaction to them too. I broke out in a rash and hives...it sucked, plus a fever of 101. I since stopped taking them and my doctor has put me on augmentin to battle the sinus infection I've got. Although I think it's really allergy symptoms now...He gave me Allergra and Claritin and I'll see how I do with that. I think I've got major indoor allergies...and they started about 2 years ago...it sucks, as I was never allergic to anything very much a few years ago. Now my body is overreacting and I can sympathize with everyone here now.

Just be careful and report anything strange to your doctor. I'd like to find a good ND too, I'm sick of GP and MDs.

Sulfa is also in most diuretics. Takes body a long time, maybe few years to recognize the sulfa in the diuretics but eventually it will.
