Hi all, I"m new to this board. dx'd in June of '01. I only had occasional ob's until I delivered a baby in January. Since then I have an ob every cycle just before my period. They are not major ob, just a small sore that never blisters over but mostly just burns and itches a bit. Certainly manageable compared to ob's some people have.
I am on Famvir twice a day (forget the mg..250 I think) and it isn't working. I'm allergic to Valtrex and my OB said there wasn't much more he could do except send me to an infectious disease doctor. This seems severe to me. He thought maybe my immune system was wacky. (Side bar: I'm currently seeing an Endocrinologist due to some abnormal labs. She thinks my thyroid is normal, although large but is checking my adrenal glands and a few other possible culprits. I'm extremely exhausted and it's not due to a 9month old).
Anywho, I was just wondering what some of you are able to do to suppress the ob's. Should I eat a certain diet?? I'm reading that chocolate is a problem, I'm a bit of a chocoholic so I could TRY to take that out. DH and I were thinking of trying a low carb diet, wondering if that could help??
What do you all think??
TIA,
Jessica

Hi Jessica, (hey, we have the same name :) )welcome to the board!
As you'll read over and over, what works for one person may not work for another, which sucks and means lots of experimentation, but what can you do?
My Obs are a lot like yours it sounds like, every mentrual cycle and it's just some bumps, no blisters, just lots of itching. Mine are on my butt cheek, just inside my crack. So annoying, but I guess if could be worse. Have you ever had really bad obs? or have they always been kind of mild?
Read all of the threads about OOO, OLE, Garlic Oil and other suppliments and topicals. You may have done that by now, I know when I found this board I was so happy to see so much info and experience that I read probably every word!
I would guess that it will help you to get your system up and running properly. I know that I did a bunch of blood work recently and found some things off-kilter, my adrenals among other things, and when I righted them my energy levels came up and I also mentally felt like I was in a better way and felt like I could fight things off.
I'm a chocoholic too and have toned it down a lot, although i ate some chocolate the other day and it didn't seem to hurt. I was experimenting. It seems that my MAIN trigger is my stinkin period, a tough thing to get around. I've found a lot of relief from garlic oil, something you might want to look into. It helps tremendously with itching and I think it helps with lengh of the OB as well.
I have a few questions for you... Did your OBs get worse while you were pregnant? Does your husband have H as well? Were you able to have a vaginal birth? or were you having an Ob at the time you delivered?
I've never tried any prescription treatments, just a combo of Lysine, Olive leaf Extract, garlic (raw and tablets), some specific vitamins (that I found i needed after the blood work) and clean living, and it seems to keep things at bay. You'll find lots of info and nice people here, and hopefully some relief from your Obs!
Good luck

Thanks for the reply,
I have never had a major ob. When I found out I had herpes, even the doctor was surprised. He said "well it doesn't look like herpes but we'll biopsy it anyways." I have no idea how long I had had it when I found out.
To answer a couple of your questions, no dh does not have it. Since I only seem to have an ob around my period, we don't have sex then. So far it's been ok. I found out I had herpes the day we were to leave for vacation. On this vacation, dh, then dbf was going to propose. He still did, three days after finding out I had it. I was so lucky, he has never been bothered by it.
After that one, I think maybe I had two obs before getting pg. I didn't have another ob until I was 36wks. That was when I went on Famvir, so I could supress it in order to have a vaginal delivery. We attempted it, however I had a csection due to another reason all together.
Since the baby, I have them every month with my period. Therefor my ob prescribed my birth control to be taken continuously, thereby supressing my period and maybe, hopefully, my ob's!!
I'll keep looking around on some of the supplements you mentioned, I take so many already, I can't imagine adding more!!! LOL
Thanks again,
Jessica

Please reconsider taking the Pill continuously to ward off herpes. The long-term side effects of the Pill are much more dangerous than having h ob's.
I also went for several years (and 2 births) having only 1 or 2 ob's a year. Then something happened, and I get them generally around my period, too. I have not used suppressive therapy, but have heard many people complaining that it does not work for them.
I am still working on it. Garlic is good when I have ob's, but doesn't seem to keep them away. I have just started experimenting with Olive Leaf.
Good luck! Keep in touch!
