View Full Version : Getting Discouraged: Need Help

I have always lifted off and on my entire life but never enough to really consider myself a weightlifter. You could say I was muscular compared to the average 18 year old but compared to people my age who lift steadily I couldn't compete. Well since I started college in September I have been lifting every night except Sundays for 45-60 minutes. I started by doing lighter weights with more reps and more exercises just to get my muscles toned and prepared for heavier lifting. About 3 weeks ago I started doing heavy weights until the point where I reached 4-6 reps and couldn't go further. I do one muscle group a night for 30-45 minutes and then finish by riding a stationary bike. Here is the routine:

Monday: Triceps
Tuesday: Back
Wednesday: Shoulders
Thursday:Chest
Friday: Biceps
Saturday:Legs
Sunday: off

I have been eating high protein foods and have stayed away from sweets, sodas, and fatty foods. I also drink 2 or 3 protein shakes daily and mix it with glutamine. My problem is this: I feel sore the day and maybe 2 days after I do every single muscle group except for biceps, my chest feels stronger, back is starting to look stronger, and my triceps are really cutting up. But as everyone knows, the biceps are what most people look at first...including myself. I lift to the point where my biceps are completely fatigued but the next day they are not soar. I don't know if I'm accomplishing anything. They do feel stronger but they aren't making the progress my other muscles are making. What do you guys suggest I do, or can you offer any encouragement because I'm starting to get discouraged a little.

I have this SAME problem. I can't seem to whoop my biceps' butt anymore. I just got so pissed the other night when working out, and i did like 14 sets of 6 reps. Next day, Nothing. Today, nothing. No soreness. It's dumb. Maybe we reached our genetic limit.

Take a look at your form and breathing .This is key, and can be the difference between sore or not muscles.Your muscles need alot of oxygen while you are working them out. If you are not breathing to the fullest potential the carbon dioxide and air exchange can cause a build up of lactic acid,I'm sure you know this, which can cause sore muscles. Also you didn't mention stretching,I'll take it that you put in at least 10-25 mins. stretching before and after every workout, this is also key.Hope it helps.Could just be that you are building muscle, this does cause some discomfort or pain.
