Poppy04,

My sister just gave me information on food that helps with arthritis
she is in remission right now. She told me to eat lots of fresh veg. and fresh fruit, Fish, chicken. She told me to stay away from tomatoes of any find, and red meats. I have started eatting better and I can tell a difference if I eat to much tomatoe products. Also she said to stay away from pre process foods. Hope this will help you. there are also web sites regarding food and arthritis.

I've been off all wheat products after a dietician recommended it for my RA. Didn't notice it helped until i went back on it for a day and got really ill. Apparently there's some links to RA and the way the bowel digests food so any of that yummy white bread or other processed and sugary foods is best to avoid. Anything is worth a try. All the best!

I have a friend with RA, so I've done a little online research and I've read that it's a good idea to stay away from dairy products. This particular friend is a butter and cream fiend and not willing to try going off dairy, but I wish she would because I think it has helped a lot of people feel better.

Unfortunately I have severe osteoporosis and need all the calcium I can get and dairy provides the best. Oh well! Can't win it all.

That's too bad! It's good you are being careful to get enough calcium.

I wonder, Have you tried the calcium/vitamin D fortified soymilks (for example, Silk brand)? These have as much calcium and vitamin D (for absorption) as regular dairy milk serving for serving.

It would seem like a safe switch, but you'd probably want to talk with your doctor to see what he thought about it just to be safe.

Good Luck!

Sorry I didn't mention this but I drink Silk all the time, chocolate, coffee and the vanilla. I love Sun Soy also but Silk has more variety for my taste. I eat Tofu products as well. I like to make smoothies with silk, add mango, banana, orange juice and silk vanilla, um very good.

Hi,
I was seeing a naturalpathic doc for my RA last year. He believes that 40-50% of RA is caused by food allergies. I did the elimination diet and had the blood work done for allergies, sure I had none...well out of 99 tests I had 56 positives, some of my postives were on the elimination diet. Anyway I felt much better when I started the elimination diet, but it did not take away all of my symptoms. I have learned that certain foods will cause a flair up (chocolate!, too much beef, etc), my doc also said that night shade vegetables are bad for RA. I also had another NP doc tell me to eliminate all sugar & white flour products. The more foods I tried beyond the elimination diet the worse I got. At one point the doc had me only on rice...that was very stressful and I still had some symptoms. So I think that to an extent food matters. When I told my Rheumy that chocolate causes a flair up she was surprised. I have also been told that the mediterrian diet is good for RA, I haven't tried it.

All of my joints ache when I eat eggs. I know this because when I stay away from them, my joints are much better.

I did notice, interestingly enough, that Kyolic garlic tablets are also great for RA. I am not sure how it works, but it works for me.

Orange juice is available that is fortified with calcium. Drinking coffee and smoking depletes the body of calcium also. The body does not absorb calcium with ease. Other supplaments can assist the mechanism. I've read about coral calcium am not sure the affectiveness or purity of product. Not all are created equal. There are different grades. My mom has osteo. If I were to take a calcium supplament I would (for now) opt for the best grade of coral calcium on the market because it is pruportedly well absorbed by the body. I would take a supplement that is better absorbed then one that is excreted easily. Puts to light another angle about peeing money away.
