Hi. Welcome to the board.

What prompted you to be evaluated for ADD? I know with many adults newly diagnosed its things like employment or relationships that cause them to look into a diagnosis.

What subtype of ADD are you?

A good book for someone new to ADD is "Healing ADD" by Dr. Amen

It talks about 6 subtypes of ADD that Dr. Amen himself has seen in his patients. He talks about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of the various ADD subtypes.

Hi FreeSpirit - and thank you for your greetings!

I have been "effected" by ADD since I was a child, but unfortunatly never recognised as ADD. Its only over the last few years, my problems with keeping motivated in jobs, relationships and my everyday evaluation of everything and extream restlessness and rooted boredom and anything that made me do some further reasearch into ADD.

Whilst being diagnosed for depression my GP, who is excelent, took into account exactly how I am and how I was feeling and refered me to further specialist diagnosis.

I'm afraid I know knothing about subtype's :(

Early days, but I'm hoping medication and any other advice I can recive may help!

:)

If you've read my other post you might know the question about to be asked, Have you tried any other treatments before resorting to medication? There are safer treatments out there that most doctors dont tell you about and many of them dont even know about. Supplements have been proven to be just as helpful. There is also biofeedback which works well for teens and young adults (which you are!!) with ADD/ADHD. Please research all your options, medication is not the only way and most meds used for ADD are very hard core and should be used only as a last resort.

Do you have a job or are you going to school currently? If you have a lot of problems with things like keeping a job and organization you might want to look into getting an ADD coach. This person would help you figure out ways to be better organized, find a job that fits your personality, etc.

Thanks for the link - thats very helpful :)

I am intrested in finding alternative solutions to perscription drugs, are there any web sites avalible - and I'll have a look at your other post.

Yes I do have a job, I'm a sales manager - I've not heard about ADD coaches but that sounds very very helpful I'm not sure that there is anuything like that avalible in the UK?

The UK actually has a lot of ADD support groups, I will find a few links for you later.

What subtype do you think you are? As I've mentioned before, beCalmd is a great help for many types of ADD, and it is safe.

There are tons of other options. On the net you have to know which sites to trust though, sometimes thats hard. (as far as buying things)

L-Tyrosine is cheap and helpful for many with ADD. It's a good place to start, however of course it does not work for everyone (me included) but it does great for others.

First off, you should be taking a multi vitamin, and have a high amount of omega3 through diet or supplementation. You should also try to eliminate any foods you notice cause you to feel/behave in an odd manner. Red dye does it to me everytime, I can drink one strawberry soda and people will think that I'm on crack...litterally.

I'd say my symptoms relate to Overfocus ADD, but also see a lot of my behavioral patterns in
Hyperactivity/Impulsive - but more so when I was younger.

You could try a serotonin enhancing supplement such as 5-HTP, I think beCalmd would work extra good for your subtype of ADD!! If you take 5-HTP alone it might work but I doubt it'd be as good as beCalmd.

I too, tried biofeedback many years ago...back when I didn't realize where my anxiety was coming from. As I remember it did help me to understand when I was getting into an anxiety state. Going to the biofeedback counselor also helped me through some depression. However, getting diagnosed this past summer and finally realizing why I have always been a step behind everybody else..and also so restless...helped me tremendously! Just knowing the reason is half the battle. I agree with Free Spirit, check out your options and study up before you make "med or not" choices. I am on Strattera myself because the doctor said I am on the more severe side of AD/HD. I would have never believed it, but my husband never even flinched when he said that...what a smartaleck!!
