Dear Friends at Healthboards,
I was woken from my sleep last night choking on my own acid vomit.... It shot up and woke me up fortunately....I managed to make it to the bathroom, but the back of my throat is very sore...
I have had IBS for nearly four years now and have suffered from indigestion before but not this bad...
Does anyone else have this ????
I see my gastroenterologist next week...But I am a tad frightened after last nights experience ..
I have now had this acid all day...
Please please can anyone reccomend something to take, I am currently taking milk of magnesia...

Thank You friends .. Janie B

I had this exact same experience not so long ago. Its only happened to me once but I was so frightened, I couldnt go back to sleep incase I chocked again! I had a very sore throat and couldnt stop coughing. At the time I was trying to give up smoking and had been chewing nicotine gum for a few days and thought this was the cause.
I havent suffered indigestion for while now but I used to have it chronic when I was pregnant with my son, and terrible heartburn. Drinking milk helped a lot but its short lived. Have you tried gaviscon etc...doesnt help me, just repeats on me but worth a try.

I've also had this a couple of times in my life....yes it's awful. I take Pantaloc for a hiatus hernia. My stomach aches and I feel nauseated 90% of the time.

Any thoughts on what causes the acid indigestion?

Try orange peel extract capsules for the heartburn. You take one each other day and that stuff works wonders. You can find them in healthstores. But be sure you dont have ulcers as that is its only restriction. Nexium also works nice but to me it gave me diearreah, that happens all the time I take antiacids with magnesium. Good luck

Hi,
I don't know if this will help you, but it worked for me. Are you a coffee drinker? Whether it is caffeinated or decaffeinated, coffee contains something that wreaks havoc on your stomach. I had terrible stomach pains and felt nauseous all of the time also. I stopped drinking coffee less than a week ago and I am feeling soooooo much better already. If you do drink coffee, you might considering stopping for a few days to see if your symptoms improve. Hope you feel better. Been there!

You could be in the first beginning stages of gerd. All depends really, on how many times a week you have the problem.Or could be gastritis.

Or for a quik fix you could run to the drugstore and pickup either zantac 75 or pepscid ac.

I've seen a lot of posts that asked about prescriptions for acid reflux/GERD. THe prescriptions can work fine, but they only mask the symptoms, not treat the underlying cause.
I too have had acid spells where the acid backed up into the back of my mouth. I was terribly afraid to go back to sleep because of it happening again. I had this happer 3-4 times over the course of two weeks. I got on the internet for awhile (it seems like 4-5 days straight) and finally found something that helped me (still in the process of recovery). I DID get rid of all the acid within a week or so, though. Please read this post all the way to the bottom-I found something that works very well.
If you are having these symptoms, you may have GERD (Gastro-Esophygeal Reflux Disease). I had had GERD for several years and kept it under control with Zantac, then later, Aciphex. I am still on aciphex and am trying to get off this. I will try to get off for good by the end of the year.
I did some research and found out that my system was very acidic. Most diets these days are very acidic. Caffeine and alcohol also contribute. There are test kits you can get (detailed below) to test your pH. Your urine should be between 6-8.5--my urine was off the scale (below 5) for the first week that I took these capsules. Your body tries to keep the blood slightly alkaline (pH ~7.2) and how it does this is by shuttling waste products to other parts of the body (if it can't excrete or neutralize them). Normally, these products are eliminated, but when your body becomes ultra-acidic, the body essentially loses its ability to get rid of these waste products, and they get stored in other parts of the body, including the muscles and other tissue. I had problems with muscle weakness and general fatigue.
One set of capsules are homeopathic--essentially tissue salts to help neutralize the pH of the body, the other is concentrated vegetable matter, which is basic. I have no vested interest in having anyone try these--I just was like some of you who had real problems with acid and heartburn symptoms.
One other thing--I have had to give up coffee. It tears my stomach up--even decaffeinated. Luckily, I can still drink beer. (But both of these still make the body go acidic.)
You can order online. Try it. It worked for me. I've been on them now for close to six months and I feel great!

The homeopathic remedy that I used was Vaxa's Buffered-pH- this one exclusively for about 3 months.
There is also some really good info on their site about balancing your system's pH and what pH imbalance can do to your body!!!
Just do a search for Vaxa --

Good luck and God Bless.

Try Prilosec or Nexium. I've had what you described for years and these meds keep it under control. Prilosec can now be purchased over the counter in the US. Nexium is by RX.

I have it when I eat wheat. Have you ever tried avoiding grains or the carbohydrate specific diet? I was on Prilosec until I cut out wheat from my diet .

I am on pantaloc but I am having a lot of break through acid reflux- been on this med for about 3 years and it is not working like it used to. I too have the same thing happen in my sleep and am up for a hour until it goes away. Not sure where to go from here.Almost to the point where I can hardly eat anything that doesn't cause it.

Stress can make acid indigestion worse, so try and relax whenever you can. A great way to relieve the acid is peppermint tea- tastes gross at first but works wonders! How you eat is very important, take you time, make sure you chew your food completely, and rest for at least 30 mins after a meal if possible, especially after a big meal. Try and avoid caffiene, fruit, too much sugar and spicy food. Even as a last resort go on a 'bland food' diet e.g boiled potatoes and broccoli. This should help
