I would just like to say that TMJ surgery and orthognathic surgery are NOT the same thing. Orthognathic surgery has NOTHING to do with the joints, they don't touch them at all. The success of orthognathic surgery is MUCH better than TMJ surgery. If you have to get orthognathic surgery, you're going to be better off than if you get TMJ surgery. So if you are having orthognathic surgery don't read what people wrote about TMJ surgery as much because the outcome if much different. And orthognathic surgery is alot more success-ful, alot!

i agree with you that orthognathic surgery is different from specific TMJ surgeries.

however, i have to disagree with you when you say that orthognathic surgery has nothing to do with TMJs. whenever you're operating on the jaw, it can affect the condyles and the TMJs. it makes sense - if you're 'yanking on the mandible' to put it into a more optimal position, it will obviously do something to the TMJs [good or bad].

surgery is surgery and they all have risks associated with them. it's better to be educated about anything that's going to be done to you especially if there's a significant risk of harm, *or* if that type of surgery wont even fix the apparent problem.

When I said it has nothing to do with the TMJ I meant that they don't touch them at all. Also, orthognathic surgery isn't meant to fix TMJ problems. If you are having orthognathic surgery, don't expect your TMJ problems to just go away forever, because it is not necessarly going to happen.

I haven't had either TMJ surgery or orthognathic surgery but I had many surgeries in my life and lived many years longer and it is my experience that any organ or joint where surgery is performed is a problem to you later in life. You had surgery a few months ago and being young you are convinced, as it is easy to do when a person is young, that this surgery is a magical cure all but in years to come I have a strong feeling you will be sorry that you allowed such a major surgery done. Life is long and suffering makes it longer. My best to you.
