What do you guys think of root canals? My dentist told me I need 2 of them, but I have heard that they can cause infection and some serious health problems. Is it necessary to get them? Is there another alternative? I am afraid of dentists as it is and this just makes it worse. Thanks.

Well I have had 2 of them and HAD to have because I had an infection. They are not fun and expensive. Do you have any infection?

No,I don't have any infection. They are just deep cavities. They are sensitive when I chew and also to hot and colds. They are making me pretty miserable too. Thanks for replying.

l have had 5 root canals in the last 3 months! One was because of a deep cavity and extreme sensitivity to hot and cold. Once the dentist did the root canal it was great and felt absolutely no pain ever again in that tooth! My appointment next week, he will put the final crown on and l can't wait!! One more appointment and l am finished with all my massive dental treatments, and l finally get my partials! Yeah!!
Good luck with your proceedure!

I've had 3 teeth with root canals. The root canals are expensive, but living with the discomfort is worse. They were not fun, but not nearly as bad as I thought they'd be. I'd put it closer to getting a filling than having a tooth pulled.
I had to have my first one because I had an infected tooth that did not show up on xrays or exams. It developed into a serious infection and it put me in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. I had the root canal shortly thereafter and all was fine.
I'd say, go for it. Just plan on a day or so of discomfort. And also, I still had some temp and pressure sensitivity for several months afterward. Don't expect and instant cure, but it will get better.
