Hi,
I just got my period after having no period for 3 1/2 months after stopping BCP. I did take provera for 10 days but I got my period less than 24 hours after I finished the last pill. My period is on the 4th day but it is very very light and brownish. It was moderate for the first 3. Is this normal? Or too light? This seems normal for a 'pill' period but I don't remember what my normal periods were like (I was on the pill 4 1/2 years).
Also, does anyone know if this should jump start my normal cycle? I am almost 100 percent sure there is nothing else wrong since I have been to 2 doctors and they can't find anything (labs all normal, etc). I heard from several sources that if you just menstruate once (have the progesterone) then you will be regular again. Is that true? Thanks.

That's really hard to say. I was on Provera for about six months...starting it on day 12 of my cycle and continuing for 10 days which resulted in regular periods during those months. I decided to quit the Provera to see if my own hormones would take over and it did. My cycles became regular on their own the very first month. Did your doctor only give you enough pills for this one cycle?

Yes, just once. I had horrible depression on the provera. I don't think taking it again would really be a good idea for me. The doctors are hoping that it will just resolve now on its own. Were you on the pill before you took the provera? I am just curious to see if this post pill amenorrhea does actually resolve on its own. In other words, I am just afraid that the pill caused a permanent problem. I have heard horror stories. Thanks for your reply :).

Did you have regular periods before the pill? The provera could take anywhere from 3 days to about 2 weeks to work with the most frequent range in the 3-7 day zone (I had mine after 1, it was really weird). Also, the hormone levels on the pill may have not worked with you for some reason and that sometimes stops a period while you are on them. I want to have a baby so I am frustrated with it.I really hope that next month I have a normal one.
If they can't get your period to come with the provera, they will give you an estrogen/progesterone combo which usually will work. I definately understand about being worried, I'm still freaking out. I hope this helps

ngolden..yes i did have a regular period before i started takeing the bcp. it was right on time every month. then i got on bcp.. i also had regular periods on ortho nova 777 i had bad mood swings so they changed me to alesse and i was on them for 10 months and in july 03 was my last period on alesse bcp alesse totaly stopped my period. i had a pap in june 2003 it was normal.. i took the provrea for my 10 days and this is day 8 since i have had my last provera still no period. what is a estrogen/progesterone combo? he told me that if i dont start in 2 weeks that he was gonna refere me to another obgyn dr. i dont think this dr knows what hes doing...i mean he told me to start my bcp back last sunday with or without a period..i mean come on you dont start your pills till you have a period..right? i dont want to get preg. and not being on my bcp it scares the crap out of me. see ive had 2 miscarrages, 1 in june 2000 i was 2 1/2 months and had a dnc..2nd miscarrage in june 2001 i was 4 1/2 months and had a dnc. i am very afraid of pregnancy. i do have 1 son and hes 14ys old and yes i do want more children but after 2 mis. i want to avoid that thought. so what is a estrogen/progesterone combo? thanks fo helping me cause i have no clue.. each day that goes by and i dont have a period it just P****S me off more and more. i am 33 yrs old!

I think that you should see another doctor, especially if he is not explaining (or doesn't have any idea about) what is going on. If you don't bleed from the provera it just means that there is low estrogen in the system (most of the time). Since estrogen is what builds up the lining and progesterone just maintains it, when you stop the provera (progesterone) you are supposed to have a withdrawl period from stopping it. You are still within normal range for having a period after the provera (again, it can be up to 2 weeks or so). If it were me, I wouldn't start a new pack of pills just yet. It is not good to introduce new hormones into the system in the form of BCP's when you don't know where in the cycle you are, that is why you take it when your period starts ( every time you have a period the cycle 'starts itself over' so the hormones are low). But then again, I am not a doctor.
They can give you some provera and premarin (I think) and the premarin (estrogen) will build up lining and the provera (progesterone) when stopped will cause it to shed. I hope this helps.
