When I had my teeth (26) extracted I had a post extraction checkup the next day. The dentist took the dentures out, inspected his handiwork in my mouth and put the dentures back in without any problems. On the other hand, I've read on other boards of people taking their dentures out a couple of days or so after extractions and not being able to put them back in. The most common reason for not being able to put them back in was because the gums swelled up larger than the denture could fit back onto. If you try to take out the denture be careful. You'll probably be able to take them out for a few minutes and then put them back in but that won't give you much relief for long. If you can see that the swelling has gone down quite a bit you should be ok to take the denture out for a while. Start with short durations of time and slowly make them longer. If the denture is still very snug on your gums and you don't want to chance taking them out try lifting them up off the gum a little to relieve the pain. If you have some ambesol or other tooth pain ointment put some on and put the denture back in place. That should help for a few hours. With the sores beginning to develop you should see your dentist soon to work out those sore spots. Most dentists will see their denture patients right away. If you didn't have a post extraction checkup yet then you should have one fairly soon anyway. In the meantime, rinse often with warm, salty water. It promotes healing and feels soothing on the gums too. If you have any other questions please ask. There are some other new denture wearers here that may be experiencing what you are. Good luck! Try keeping the dentures out for longer periods. Start by doubling the time it takes to clean and rinse. So if it takes 2 minutes to clean and rinse keep the dentures out for 4 minutes. Keep doubling the time until you reach a length of time that helps relieve the pain. Hopefully, you'll find out that you can take the denture out for as long as you want and wear them for as long as they are comfortable. If the dentures are causing you a lot of pain you should be seeing your dentist on an emergency basis or not wearing the denture at all. Yos B.Bach 11-29-2003, 06:26 PM ola-went to see my dentist this morning never saw him but his assistant or the chic that does dentures came in ground on my dentures some and fixed it best as she could then rinsed my mouth with some kind of mouthwash type stuff and told me to come back in tuesday for the stitches to be removed, also said the dentist said i can take em out when i sleep now-so hopefully tonight ill sleep a bit better;I been waking up early cause the irritation from keepin em in so long.Anyhow after my visit i felt much better, went home put a movie on for my two year old while my wife took my 7 yr old to a b-day party.oh before i go further-there is a spot on my upper gum that is not a sore spot but a real sensitive spot where the surgeon had to cut me deep-stitched it bleeds a little everytime i remove the denture. So here i am laying on the couch drifting off to sleep with my two year old laying beside me,he looks at me smiles, and goes to adjust himself"BAM"accidentally headbutts me right into the worst spot in my mouth lol i cried and moaned for a good ten minutes popped a vicoden and went to sleep christ it hurt so bad=p.
Now as im writing this everythigns ok just drank some ensure thinking about what itll be like when i can eat real food again. on a last note, while im sitting here rambling-this goes out to you yos and everyone else that posts here-THANK YOU -i lurked on these boards for two months reading yall's posts about dentures etc before i got up the nerve to find me an oral surgeon and get this done.I have been living with a mouthfull of bad teeth for over 4 years now suffering the pain and embarrassment etc due to my phobia of the dentist. If i wouldnt have found this board i'd probably never have gotten the courage up to go and get this taken care of-thank all of you-god bless Yos 11-29-2003, 07:51 PM Hi again B.Bach
Forgive me if I laughed but that was funny about your 2 year old head butting you. I probably envisioned it much differently than how it actually happened but I'm a voracious reader. Reading give me license to use my imagination :D Your dentures are awkward and a real pain in the you know where right now but it it gets better. You'll see much quicker progress once the stitches are out and the sore spots taken care of. Hopefully, by the end of next week you'll be able to get on with the real job of mastering the dentures. It sounds like your gums have reached a point were the swelling has come down considerably. Soon, your gums will begin to shrink (resorb) and the dentures will become loose. Try to avoid adhesives while the extraction sites are still tender and healing. Cleaning off adhesive usually involves rubbing or scrubbing and you don't want to unnecessarily aggrevate your gums at this early stage. If you feel you need to use dentures adhesive I would suggest using the powder. It comes off of the gums much easier than creams. Between 2 and 4 weeks after extractions most dentists will give the dentures a soft reline. It's after the first soft reline that new denture wearers usually make the most progress in terms of eating and speaking because it's the first time the dentures fit well. With a little bit of luck you should be able to chow down (carefully) on a complete Christmas dinner :D In the meantime, as you progress onto semi-solid food, practice chewing even when eating mushy foods to get a sense of how the dentures behave when you chew. When you move onto more solid foods chew small, even amounts of food on both sides of your mouth. That will prevent the dentures from tipping. In the meantime, keep rinsing with warm salty water, keep smiling and avoid your kids heads :D Sorry, had to laugh again. If you have any other questions just ask. Good luck! Yos |
