I was wondering if anyone knows of a good natural alternative to alleviate lower stomach pains/gas/some bloating. My daughter has been having alot of this In this past year; doctor's took tests and say things like IBS, or ulcer, or sugar intolerance. I think it's guessing time. She has given up sugars and dairy except cheese, which she takes a Lactaid before, just in case. She never used to have stomach problems before, no matter what she ate. She did take up drinking alot when this started with a group of friends, but now that she and them are 21 they have lightened up on that. Plus I've always warned her of the health-hazards, I don't drink. I wonder if she damaged her stomach in some way from drinking, but her friends are fine, so maybe not.
Anyway, are there any good remedies for the lower stomach pain? The doc gave her Zantac, but that caused too much diarreha.

I would try a couple of capsules of ginger to see if it would help. If you are a purest, try some ginger tea.

Thankyou so much. She loves teas, so that will be a pleasure to try! :)
Any other ideas out there?

Hi,
"bitters" before a meal may help, also. Personally, I use the outer leaves of broccoli or cauliflower. 1-2 leaves, WELL chewed, usually helps me. But, you can buy things like swedish bitters, and I'm sure, others.
Another thing you might try is flax seed. Gring it fresh and sprinle on cereal, yogurt, ice cream, whatever. Or just grind and eat, that's how my daughter does it. Start with 1 teaspoon, and build up to 2 tablespoons per day. Flax has excellent demulcent (soothing) properties, as well as an aid to bowel regularity, gas, bloating, and cleansing. Flax is also loaded with Omega 3 & 6 oils.
Marshmallow (plant, NOT candy!), a tablespoon mixed with hot water and allowed to sit a few minutes to thicken, then eaten, also works well to sooth the stomache and gas. A sprinkle of cinnamon on top enhances the bland taste, and is also good for the tummy.
Hope this helps some. Good luck!

All these sound so good! In case she doesn't like the flax seeds, will the oil do the trick too?

Assuming this isn't the result of a serious condiion or having such things ruled out, you may want to think about Cayenne. I've only recently discovered the many benefits of this misunderstood herb. Cayenne pepper is the last thing most people would want to take for any kind of stomach problems. Recent claims are actually showing Cayenne to be of benefit to digestive problems (among many other things). The burning sensation is only the result of the nerve's reaction and not true damage. Cayenne is available in capsule form. You may want to do some research on the medicinal benefits of Cayenne first and decide if it's a possible option. Just to be on the safe side though, I would make SURE anything serious can be dismissed first. I say this because I had very mild on and off lower abdominal pain for a couple of years and it turned out to be a bad appendix. The pain was mostly not in that typical lower right region either. Something to think about.

Thankyou very much....I'll look into Cayenne. We saw two docs who did exams and bloodwork. They thought maybe IBS or ulcer? She's kind of young for ulcer, hmm...but she drinks sometimes with friends; not heavy I don't know if alcohol causes any damages to the stomach???... she stopped for awhile but that didn't clear up the problems. Now she drinks teas and eats smaller meals....and found out high sugar foods cause the most pains....now she is starting to feel better.
I'm still curious about the flax seed oils if anyone knows about that? Any other suggestions welcome too, since although she's better, the problem is still lingering as sometimes it still flares up.
One good thing about it all....on her new low-sugar, small meal way of eating she is losing weight(she was overweight for a long while).
But I am still concerned because I'd like her not to have to fear a sudden pain attack while she might be out eating somewhere. The problem is much better but I wonder if the stomach will heal up in time so the attacks won't happen anymore.

Well, nutritionally, they're about the same. But, the oil does not contain the demulcent, or soothing, effect. The oil would also not provide the mucilaginous effect on the bowel, so she wouldn't really experience the relief she needs. But, the oil does contain the Omegas.
Unless she REALLY hates things with nutty flavors, she shouldn't have too much trouble with the seeds. Their flavor is mildly nutty and pleasant. I started my daughter off on them by fine grinding (not gringing, as in my last post! lol) and blending into fruit/yogurt smoothies.
good luck,

Ha! Don't you hate discovering the typing errors after the fact? Sometimes I edit but other times I don't catch it for awhile and hope people figure I'm not a moron; just human.
Well, thankyou so much Copper for the information. Those seeds sound like a very good addition to a diet...I may even have some myself! I love all sorts of nuts and sunflower seeds, so why not give it a try! Again, thanks. This board really has alot of people who know their stuff.
