Hi, all!!!

I was wondering if any of you were on anti-anxiety meds before surgery and what your doctor told you about it. Is it safe? I read on the Zoloft website that I needed to immediatly inform my doctor if I was going to have surgery. What does that mean? Should I be worried? Does it affect healing? Etc...

Thanks...

Deborah

Hi,

What does this mean? It means just that: Inform your doctor. He/she will inform you whether it is a concern and whether and for how long you need to stop taking your meds before surgery and when you can start taking them again. I don't think that anti-anxiety / anti-depressants will interfere with healing, anesthesia, etc. The only drugs they tell you to definitely stop taking are all NSAIDS and anything with a steroid in it.

But the bottom line is to be absolutely sure. Inform your doctor about anything you're taking--this includes vitamin supplements as well as any herbal supplements. I know they told me to stop taking all my vitamins one week befere surgery. Vitamin E as well as any NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect which you certainly don't want as it makes you more prone to bleed and less able for a wound to clot.

I am on Paxil, it did not phase anyone, surgery went as planned and my incisions and such have all healed just fine. I think they are just covering themselves. Always let them know your meds, including OTC, vitamins and any herbals, especially before surgery. Good Luck!

I take zoloft and have had no trouble with the four surgeries that I have had. No need to worry. Hopefuly the zoloft will reduce your anxiety about the surgery. I don't think I could have made it through this last year without it. Just be sure to tell your doctor.

Hope all goes well for you.
