Yes, there is a difference. HIV is the name of the virus that eventually causes the syndrome known as AIDS.

HIV stands for "human immuno-deficiency virus", meaning it is a virus that causes your immune system to stop working correctly.

AIDS stands for "acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome," meaning it is a group of illnesses that are a result of a poor immune system, which was caused by the virus.
