I had hammertoe surgery about 8 months ago and my big toe is still swollen. My doc said the swelling can last for up to a year. Is this true? And if it doesn't go down naturally, what can I do? Cortisone shot? Some medication? HELP!!

Hi,

I had surgery 10 weeks ago today and they told me that I could continue to have some swelling for 9 months to a year.

The swelling will eventually go down but it will be very gradual.

My doc said that there is a possibility that it will NEVER go down...My toe is a bit swollen and over the past few months I haven't seen a decrease in the degree of the swelling. The swelling in the 2nd and 5th digit toes has gone down completely, so I assume that the swelling in the big toe will go down, too.
