Okay - so I have a question for all of you who have gone through the surgery. My bunion removal, hammertoe and neuroma surgery is Monday.

My work has a required trip coming up February 18 - 21. That's two and a half months after surgery. :D I can't imagine traveling with crutches and a boot, etc. and trying to maneuver all that luggage. :nono: That sounds like a nightmare! Will I be ready to travel or should I tell them no way? :)

Thanks for any advice!

Deborah

Hi DooBugs,

Keep in mind that while you are on crutches, your hands will be fully occupied using the crutches. Not to mention that if you are traveling on a plane, the lower pressures at high altitudes might be a problem for your recovering foot.

I would tell them no way. It is not worth the risk to your health.

Since bunion surgery can have so many faces, I'd suggest that you ask your doctor. I could have traveled in my air cast but wouldn't want to do it on crutches for work. I'm going on a cruise with my Roll-A-Bout...only 7 weeks after the surgery to lengthen my metatarsal.

I talked to my doctor ahead of time to get his opinion. He said to go for it.

Hi DooBugsMom,
I have had several forefoot surgeries for bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas. I know there are many different procedures used - especially for bunions. I don't know how extensive your bunion surgery will be but I wouldn't think you would still be on crutches 10 weeks after surgery. Has your doctor told you about how long you will need crutches? Mabey your procedure is a lot more involved than the procedures I am familar with. Anyway, if you are still on crutches then I wouldn't recommend even trying to manage all of that. I think it would definitely be a nightmare! And Ron made some good points I never thought of as well. Even if you are walking by then, your foot is likely to still be very tender. Take care and good luck with your surgery!

I traveled at 11 weeks post-op after neuroma surgery in January- did have swelling due to plane and then I hiked a lot, snorkeled etc. This time I am 5 1/2 weeks post-op from neuroma and bunion surgery and have been moving around a lot since first week or two. I definately feel that I could manage a trip in the next few weeks. But not w/crutches! Clarify w/your doctor what the aftercare expectation will be. I have had two different experiences w/two different doctors. My doctor did not want me to use them for this recent surgery after the first few days and I have not needed them. Crutches can be treacherous!
