I have recently been diagnosed by an ear/eye specialist with Chronic Post-Nasal Drip. This has been on-going ever since I was a teen-ager. I am not sure if this has impact but I am 6'2" and overweight (more or less 280 pounds).
- Every morning, I have a stuffy nose that generally gets unclogged when I take a shower. The mucus released is always white, except obviously when I have my yearly cold, sometimes with blood.
- If I do not take a shower, I usually get sneezing/coughing fits in which the mucus is released.
- If I do not get my usual amount of sleep (~7 hours) and/or am stressed in the morning, I occasionally get an episode in I vomit the mucus from my lungs for 5 to 10 minutes. My throat and oesophagus are essentially scraped raw from trying to expel the mucus from my lungs(?).
- Varying amounts of saliva end up on my pillows every night.
- When the weather is cold or humid, my nose often gets clogged up and I have to blow my nose repeatedly even though I do not have any cold or specific allergies that I know of except my normal late summer/fall ones.
- The same symptoms (sneezing/coughing/congestion) occur whenever I exert myself physically.
I was prescribed a corticosteroid spray and told use it in my nasal cavities once or twice a day. I am not sure if my condition is caused by an allergy although the specialist seemed to think otherwise.
Using the spray really does not appeal to me so any alternatives would be welcomed. I would appreciate feedback anyone could provide on my situation.
Best regards,
Donal

Hello, I am new to this board. It sounds like what I am going through. I have just recently started taking a natural supplement from GNC called Bromalain. It helps alleviate the stuffiness. I also use hepa air purifiers in the house. My son has had ear infection and strept for a while. I may have to go see an ent pending the results of the test. I also use an inhaler which seems to help. It is vick's personal steam inhaler. If you are pressed for time in the mornings it works pretty well. I hope some of this helps. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi,
I suffer basically the same type of symtoms and have tried just about everything there is. I have a non-stop post nasal drip that causes a chronic cough, all day , all night , there is no end to it sometimes. I finally had allergy tests done only to find out im not allergic to anything. my allergist recommended that i get a sinus x-ray to see if i had a chronic sinus disease. what a joy! The one thing that actually did work to stop it was a drug called (PREDISONE)it is prescribed by doctors to allergy patients to reduce swelling in the sinus area . The only bad thing is that it is only a short term relief , a 5 day prescription then its back to coughing again!

Hi JGG, I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling very well. Did you try Bromelain? You should give it a try. It worked for me when I remembered to take it. If you go to gnc and look up sinus it tells you about bromelain and vitamin c. I hope this helps you and you start feeling better soon. Take care and keep us posted.

You're not alone! For me, the worst symptom of the post nasal drip is this nagging sensation that makes me constantly clear my throat. And needless to say, I'm a very LOUD throat clearer! People think I'm making the funny "A-hem" noise on purpose. It's really quite embarrassing. My allergist put me on Astellin, which is supposedly the only prescription proven to reduce PND. It works fairly well, I guess, but I'm not overly fond of it - especially the taste. Thanks to the folks who posted about the Bromelain.

I take astelin and I'm not fond of the taste either. Sometimes it's an aftertaste too.
I also noticed that it doesn't work for me in the long term. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif It's a short term thing like if I take one spray 4 times per day helps more than 2 sprays twice per day. But I"m starting to wonder if I'm becomming immune to it or my problem is getting worse.

prednisone will also pop 7 to 10 pounds on you FAST, I had to take it last year for a chest infection and was up 7 pounds overnight (not a joke) took me over 4 months to lose the weight .. stuff is a dieters nightmare.
I also seem to have post nasal drip and have had it for years, would love to find a way to not have to cough for more then 5 minutes at a time .. ahh to dream

I was like this for all of my life until this year. What I am doing differently is I have replaced my soaps and shampoos with non-chemical items (including laundry detergent, dishwasher and dishwashing liquid, and all the cleansers in my house) and I have begun taking co-enzyme Q 10 as well as antioxidants. The combination of getting the chemicals off my body and out of my house and the repair to the cells for the damage the chemicals have done have made me antihistamine free for the first time in years. I can BREATHE!
The products I use are made from tea tree oil. Happy to share more details with you if you like...this has been an amazing success for me. Check out more info on this ... I never knew it before either! http://www.chem-tox.com/

Louise2,
I started with iodized table salt, then nonidodized table salt to sea salt non idoized (still had calcium silicate an anticaking agent, to sea salt that is not treated in any way. I am staying much clearer as more stuff breaks up after each irrigation. I still use baking soda too. People who do not or have not tried nasal irrigation makes me think wow, you have no idea what you are missing.

Today I went to the Doctors and asked how i can be tested for PND. Apparently he told me that there is not a test that will give you 100% accuracy.
He did tell me about chinese accupunture for PND. I am giving it a go, started my first lot of treatment today. Has anyone else heard of Chinese acupunture?

never heard of the chinese acupuncture, but there is something you can do to check out your PND...just see how severe it is. This may sound gross, but get a flashlight and shine it into the back of your throat. You can see the drip doing this.

I too am very curious about this chinese acupuncture. I have been suffering from chronic PND since May 2002. I have been diagnosed with severe allergies and was told that is the cause of the PND. I think I may have to go to an allergist and start getting shots again but if acupuncture really works, I may go that route.

CHINESE ACCUPUNTURE
I have only had 3 treatments so far, so have not yet noticed any difference.
The device that the doctor uses looks like a thin pen. He puts this on my sinus points which are above the eyebrow, near the nostrils, behind the ears and on my hands. He then zaps me with a very low voltage electrical current. It doesn't pierce the skin and is not painful. I have to have this done every second day for 2 weeks, have a break for 2 weeks, then do it every second day again for another 2 weeks.
I am not a big believer in this type of treatment, however, I like to try something before I have negative thoughts.
reality is, I am DESPERATE, and will try anything to hopefully one day get rid of my problem, so i can at least live half my life like a normal person.
I will keep you all informed as to my outcome.

From my experiences, there are several interrelated
conditions---tonsiloliths, halitosis, post-nasal drip, chronic phlegm, deviated septi, tonsilitis, bacteria buildup on the tongue, and allergies. At times I have had all or some of these conditions even though I am
otherwise physically healthy. My biggest problem is chronic phlegm, which I fear I have even given to my girlfriend (not sure which of these symptoms is
contagious)
I'm at the point where I've decided I want a tonsillectomy even though the doctors/ENT specialists I've seen can't guarantee that my other symptoms
will improve, only that I won't get any more tonsiloliths. I have been told that therabreath products work, but I am skeptical that this can be a panacea for all my symptoms.
OTC allergy pills helps sinus itchiness, but anything else i've tried including nasal sprays, salt water gargle, heartburn medication, allergy prescriptions don't work.....ideas anyone?

I totally agree with you. I suffer from nearly all the above. I had my Tonsils removed on Friday, atm no change. I promise to come back in two weeks time to give you an update.
Therabreath only works for a short period of time and its very expensive, I wasted over £70.00 on it http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif Apparently TriOral is the most effective product on the market but its only available to US/Canadian residents. http://www.trioral.com/
Have you considered visiting a Breath Specialist? If I see no change in 2 weeks time then I'm arranging an appointment.
