4 days ago I put two drops of Atropine Sulfate Opthalmic Solution in one of my eyes by mistake. In the dark I thought I had a wetting solution that I use when my eyes feels dry. Since then my one eye has been dialated. Will this go away? Could it indicate something else? My eye aches in direct light and I've been staying away from it.

Thanks

Jilliana,

The effects of atropine can last as long as two weeks. It isn't surprising that your eye aches in direct light as your pupil is unable to contract. Since I don't know anything about your medical history, I think it would be wise for you to call your Dr and at least touch base with him to make certain there is nothing to be worried about, but normaly there are no long term ill effects from this.

Per haps you should consider going through your medicine cabinet and disposing of all expired/used medications to avoid problems in the future.

I hope that you feel better soon.

Dear Shaman,

Thanks for the excellent information and good advice about the medicine cabinet. Just last week I cleaned out all my medicines, but the atropine wasn't expired so I left it in, even though I couldn't remember what it was for. So I suppose it is also good advice to dispose of medications you don't know why you have.

I have a call in to a specialist about this and am waiting for him to call back. However your quick response makes me feel relieved that it most likely isn't anything worse. I am in excellent health besides this, so I think that I'll probably just have to wait this out.

Again much thanks for your quick response.
