I am a frustrated Mom that would very much like to help institute a healthy diet for our kids in school. Does anybody know how to do this? There is a huge amount of hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and processed sugars in the school cafeteria. There are so many yummy snacks available now that do not contain these ingredients. Please help.

The only way to change this is to become a very educated LOUD MOUTH for your school. The best way is to get a big group of parents that are all willing to stand together, and go to the school board with your concerns. Suggest creating a forum of parents and food services....that can all get together and brainstorm on how to get it together. Ask if you can take pictures of the school lunches, then take those pictures to the school board and show them what the children are eating.
We finally in California have changed the way they feed our kids....we still have the burritos, pizza and all that, but they have healthier choices to eat with the foods. You have to remember that what the schools have to buy is what is cheap and comes in bulk...and they are in it to save money too, but there are alternatives and they need to work to find better alternatives to the food they have now.
If your school district won't listen, find out what the health trend is for your state and use that as your backbone....if all else fails, call the newspaper and see if they will do a story on health, nutrition and school lunches.
I know how frustrating this can be, but there are other alternatives out there, and I think it is the school districts responsibility to find them!
Good luck to you!

The only way that our schools superintendent questioned what was going on in our lunch rooms was: A group of parents wrote a letter to the our state school director - actually I can't remember the actual name, but I did get it off here a year or so ago. A lady told me actually the exact name and address - It somewhat worked. A group of us did actuall go to the school board but because we live in such a small town it is so...who you are - Nothing was done.!! I do know that our food service department at the school was somehow remprimanded! not that our food is any more wonderful, but it did open some eyes!!!
