I had a killer headache yesterday. I tried taking midrin first and it hardly touched it - big surprise. So by bedtime, I felt like I was going to vomit. I knew I had to do something. So, I tried the free sample of Maxalt that my Dr. had given me. Within an hour, I felt somewhat better, but not great. How long does that take to work? Anyhow, I fell asleep rather quickly but got up about 5 times to go to the bathroom!! I looked up the side effects this morning and sure enough, a RARE side effect is frequent urination. It seems like I always get the rare side effects from drugs.
Anyhow, since I fell asleep, I'm not sure if it was the sleep that helped my headache, the Maxalt, or both. Next time, I'll try to take it during the day.
Anyone else take this drug with success? I'm only taking 5 mg.

I had a sample of maxalt and it worked a little but not good enough. I prefer Zomig, its a faster acting triptan, and they just came out with a nasal spray, which I hope to try soon. Everyone is different though, good luck.

HI! When you take maxalt it is absolutly necessary to take it as soon as the headache begins. Also your suppose to take a second tablet I hour later if the first one doesnt work.

Thanks - I'll try that next time. I was kind of hesitant to take the first one because my husband was gone at work all night and I was home alone with my 2 children. I had never taken it before and was kind of worried about having some strange side effect. But I will try taking another pill an hour later if the first one doesn't work.

If your headache comes back after your initial dose, a second dose may be taken anytime after 2 hours of administering the first dose. For any attack where you have no response to the first dose, do not take a second dose without first consulting with your doctor. Do not take more than 30 mg of MAXALT in a 24-hour period, (for example, do not take more than three 10-mg tablets in a 24-hour period).
I copied this from the maxalt web page...this is actually stated on just about all the migraine Triptan descriptions. I find it pointless to waste another pill on a headache that didn't go away with the first dose.
I would ask you doc for a different sample. Zomig is a good one because it is meant to work at any time during the headache. For me it works pretty good. Even if it doesn't take away the pain 100% all the time, it at least takes the worst part away. It usually works.
Good luck...you will find something.
