View Full Version : Allergy testing......mold...and Singulair

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there is a valid reason to have to get the tests if I have absolutely no intention of getting the shots? I am pretty much aware of the allergens to which I am allergic (dust, mites, mold, pet dander (and I have two cats), some outdoor stuff probably...)
I went to an allergist recently because I wanted to get the pulmonary function tests, as I felt I was getting asthma-like symptoms. I had been taking clarinex and flonase, but recently my symptoms, especially mucous in my chest, had been bad. I suspect it is in a large part due to the mold in my air-conditioning unit (I have fought with the office and they are going to replace the air-handler). The doctor didn't seem to think mold is necessarily a problem for allergies - which I think is a totally crazy notion - I think the mold is VERY bad...

He was a bit annoyed that I did not want to get the tests. I am supposed to see him again next week. I still have no intention of getting the tests.
He gave me Singulair samples, and they seem to be working pretty well. When I wake up, there is much less mucous in my chest, though my sinus/right cheek is still swollen. Is anyone else taking Singulair? If so, what has been your experience?
Thanks!!

I just wanted to respond to the mold issue. I am allergic to everything, including mold. I get shots and they have helped a great deal. But anyway, mold is not only an allergen, it can also be a toxin. I've read national articles about families who have had to evacuate their homes because of mold toxicity. You may need to find another allergist. Also, why won't you get the shots?

Yes, I too have heard many bad things about mold and how certain strains are toxic. I thought it was pretty crazy that he downplayed the mold issue regarding my allergies.
I had to hire an independent contractor to come to check it out and write a report. He found a serious mold problem in the 15 year old air-conditioning system. I am quite sure this has been contributing a great deal to the miserable symptoms I've been experiencing. The property management (I am living in an apartment temporarily, after recently moving to Florida (May)) has agreed to replace the air-handler, but won't reimberse me the $70 for the contractor. I had called an outside party after the maintenance crew here told me there was nothing they could do. I plan to fight for my money back...
Anyway...sorry for digressing, but if anyone has legal advice regarding the above.....

So, yes, I am sure many on this list advocate the shots. First of all however, I have heard some horror stories about them...how people have almost died. I know that is very rare. But I also know that it takes a long time for them to work and a big commitment to regularly have them...for a long time. Well, I am rather needle-phobic, and I am really not interested in going that route. I am not thrilled about the alternative...being on medications indefinately...but when I find the right combo, that is what I choose for now...in addition to some more natural/holistic remedies and perhaps diet alterations. Also, perhaps I will try the nasal irrigation thing...and maybe eventually nix the meds...

Thanks..
