HIV will not show up in a CBC. you have to get a specific test for HIV status. a CBC just shows the base line of major functions. if there was something failing, or going wrong because of a weakened immune system it could possibly show up, but by then you would have some major symptoms. if you are worried, go get tested. specifically for HIV. you will be so glad you did. Sarrah 12-08-2003, 09:07 AM In most states, consent is required to be tested for hiv....that and only that is the surest way to know your status....to rely on a cbc would probably not bwe accuarate...so good luck to you :) kiddo6 12-08-2003, 06:49 PM So, if someone was experiencing symptoms.....then something would be abnormal in the blood counts? Is this right? nyxin 12-10-2003, 06:20 PM So, if someone was experiencing symptoms.....then something would be abnormal in the blood counts? Is this right? no, not really. i say not really because nothing is impossible. a CBC could be abnormal for many many reasons and have nothing to do with HIV even if that person was positive. a CBC checks all major functions, this is true, however just because HIV may be in your body does not mean it is effecting these functions as of yet. it is way more likley that a CBC would pick up the fact that you have the flu or a cold than HIV. as far as experiencing symptoms go, it circles back to my previous statement, the abnormalities may be due to a simple cold or flu like illness. if you were experiencing MAJOR symptoms the doctors would ask you if you have been exposed to HIV and then request a test that you would have to consent for specifically for HIV. remember, everyone presents HIV symptoms differently, some never do untill they have no immune system left. if you got your blood drawn for other reasons it will NOT tell you if you have HIV or not. if you did get your blood drawn and something is abnormal, it certainly does NOT mean it is HIV. you have to get the SPECIFIC test to know for sure. maybe helpful 12-10-2003, 06:53 PM Im going to approach this a little diffrently. Lets say you ARE HIV+, and that you have been for 5 years. Going on this, it is UNLIKLEY that you would not know already, that something was wrong. The reason I say that, is that MANY people, WITHOUT treatment for HIV, will begin to progress into AIDS between 5 and 8 years. WIth treatment, it can be 10 years or longer. So, IF you were HIV+, you would likley have symptoms, and yes, your CBC would likley have something wrong with it. HOWEVER, every one is diffrent, so it would be POSSIBLE, but not probable, that someone who had been HIV+ for 5 years, that their CBC would be fine, but it is unlikley. nyxin 12-10-2003, 11:57 PM Im going to approach this a little diffrently.
