There is no simple answer, especially when you do not say if he is the only family member w/AD, what about his parents, siblings, what age was the onset? Type 'Alzheimer's + genetics' into 'search' and you'll find a lot of info. The youngest I've heard of was 29, it is not just an old man's disease. People can have it for decades before it even becomes apparent, so there's little need to worry too much if you're still relatively young. You can live quite nicely for a long, long time before it becomes a serious problem.

Is he your maternal or paternal grandfather? Are you male or female?

There is a growing body of research as to genetic connections. If your grandfather has a confirmed diagnosis of probable AD, you might wish to have an AD research center do a family history on him and follow his case. The more we patients and care-partners participate in this research, the more quickly a cure or efficacious treatment can be found.

If you're interested, let us know what state you live in and I can suggest some resources for your perusal.

If you need further help with Grandpa, let us know....

Best wishes!

You don't need to answer but, if any of your grandfather's siblings or your mother's siblings have exhibited signs of mental illness in their lives (even chronic depression or bi-polar disease), I would recommend having an AD research center do a complete family history and track his case. They are much more thorough than any poster here could possibly be. I filled out a full 20 pages of history and information during my mom's initial evaluation.

Hope that helps!

Pat
