I started Atkins induction seven days ago and have been on it without cheating(and I am a big carb lover) My hunger has tremendously decreased, I have more energy and have lost 5 lbs. I have tried just watching my carb intake or counting calories and I always failed to feel good or lose weight because I was still hungry. My husband has lost 10 lbs in a week on Atkins. I am finally realizing that you have to take control over what you put in your mouth and no pill is gonna magically make it come off. I will post again in a few weeks with an update. Oh and I am almost positive I am a person with high cortisol levels.

Have you read the book? If not, everything you need to know is there. Reading the book is the first step.

During the induction phase, I lost 14 pounds. I drink a tremendous amount of water and eat very low carb meals. The grocery store sells low carb bread, which helps alot. It gives you something to have with your eggs. I eat lots of protein, some fat, and very low carb meals. I usually don't go over 30-40 grams per day. ( If even that some days) I take multi-vitamins from Costco, with extra Ginseng, Chromium, and Calcium. I also take 1000 mg of L-Carnitine, which I think really helps the weight come off faster.

I love this diet, it is a wonderful lifestyle change for the better. I don't get hungry and the weight comes off. What else could I ask for?

Hope this helps... Good luck...

Sorry it is taking me so long to reply, I have not had a chance to read the boards lately. I have been on the induction phase of Atkins for 16 days and have lost 9 lbs. I eat 3 meals a day and have snacks in between. On the induction phase you will lose weight quickly. You can't go over 20 carbs per day. Go to the Atkins website and read about induction it will tell you exactly how to do it. Eat until you are satisfied, but do not gorge yourself. Drink lots of water. Also, you can't cheat here and there because it will not work. You will go through carb withdrawl but hang in there it gets better. I bought the Atkins book at Wal-mart for $10.00. Good luck, go for it, you CAN do it!

I was wondering about this diet I'm going to start it 12 28 03 I have two friends that are doing it and they are doing great, I've heard that if you do it a long time it could damage your kidneys has anyone else heard this. I sure hope this diet works for me, I'm a little nerveous (sp) if the kidney damage is true. if anyone has heard of this please let me know thanks Tad

I get the low-carb bread at my local grocery store. I can't remember who makes it, but it is in a white bag, and has "Low Carb" written on it in big purple letters. It has 4 digestible carbs per slice.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you...

Thanks magicmom. I found some bread at a local store-they just started selling it this week. They also have a lo-carb milk. So tomorrow I am starting. Just hope I can stay with the program.

You're welcome. The low-carb milk sounds good. I hope my grocer starts selling it soon. It would be so nice to have milk again.

Thanks...

After Low-carbing for almost 5 years, I have no kidney problems. If you already have kidney problems, it can affect your kidneys negatively, and you should see a dr before starting.

Years ago I went on this diet and lost 50 lbs is about 5 months. It was great. I was going to a doctor one a week. Then he started adding back into my diet all the things that couldn't eat, a little at a time. I started gainning again. I thought that this was the best diet ever but for me it turned out to be the worse. I gained all the weight back. This time I walked it off. one mile every day for a week. Two miles the next week, and increased one mile a week until i was at 5 miles a day, 6 days a week. I lost the weight, ate pretty much what I wanted. Now I walk twice a week for 3 miles and just try and not over eat. I have kept the weigh off for 10 years. Sometimes I for get to walk. Then I just watch what I eat, until i start walking again. Please be careful on this diet. I know that it has worked for some people and not for others. Good luck

Tad, I have not been on Atkin's for a couple of years now. I lost about 40 pounds when I was actively doing the diet. I did begin having problems with kidney stones that I had never had before. Looking back, I believe most of it was from the added calcium in the food I was eating. I added quite a bit of cheese and yogurts to my diet I hadn't been eating before. I believe that if you watch what you are eating and what quantities, you'll be just fine. Even with lowering carbs, it will still be important to eat a balanced diet. I hope this will help some. Good luck! :)

I would like to sum up adkins in 10 reasons of why it works and why it doesnt work. We must look beyond the scale and realize whats really happening that most of the weight loss is not from fat. 1. Loss of Glycogen - this is stored glucose in our muscles and liver, glycogen is a good thing. The scale will change with this loss. 2. Loss of Protein - protein weighs 3x as much as fat. When we starve our selves of Carbohydrate (CHO) our bodies break down body protein (muscle) to use for energy. Eating high protein does not help this, the protein you eat is turned into energy too. 3. Loss of water - water is very heavy and is one of the first things to go on this diet. Remember that muscle is highly composed of water. 4. Loss of some fat - some will be lost, there is no doubt about this, but this loss is not very great on the scale. 5. Loss of more water - this will occur further along the diet, because now our body is trying to filter out Urea (caused by the breaking down of protein). 6. Build up of Ketones - Adkins wants a you in a state of ketosis, actually level 3 ketosis (its in his book). Look this up, you will be amazed! 7. and 8. Suppression of Appetite and Felling of euphoria (you feel like you have a lot of energy) are both from ketosis. 9. Decrease in BMR - this is how many calories you need to live, basically. The decrease in muscle mass it the reason for this. This is an example: Before Adkins your BMR was 1700 kcal/day and you need 2200 kcal/day, after/during its 1200 kcal/day and you need 1700 kcal/day. lets say you get off adkins and eat 2200 kcal/day (which is not much for a man) you would gain a Pound of fat each week no matter what. And 10. Increase in GI efficiency - you starve your body and its going to make the most of what ever you give it. Remember your body does not know your about to quit adkins. Im sorry this is so long, but i just had so much to say. Good luck. Check into www.eatright.org to find the facts...
