Hi all, I have recently decided I want to get laser surgery because I am so sick of not being able to see (only lost eyesight a year ago but hate wearing my glasses). I was all excited about the idea of getting "cured" with laser but a friend said I am way too young (23) to get it and that you have to be about 30 before they will do it on you as your eyes might not have "stabilised" or something... is this true does anyone know?
cheers heaps,
lara

The FDA at one point authorized LASIK for simple nearsightedness (no astigmatism) at the age of 18 and at the age of 21 if there is an astigmatism to be corrected.
However, with a change in your vision within the last year or so, it would be "weyes" to wait a year to see if additional changes are occuring. If the vision is not stable, it may be necessary for the surgeon to perform enhancements (repeat procedures).
good luck in your decision.
My son had LASIK surgery done on both eyes when he was 21 years-old and is very satisfied with the results - 20/15 and 20/20. While I was waiting on him to have his surgery done an 18 year-old had just had his eyes done. I think the key is not having a vision change in about a year or more and also being a good candidate with a healthy cornea and (natural) lense thickness, etc. The eye center that did my son's eyes is one of the largest in the southeast using the latest lasers and technology so it's not like will operate on just anyone who walks in the door.
